ABOUT US: The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority

The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (MKAA), established in 1978 as a nonprofit organization, owns and operates McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) and Downtown Island Airport (DKX).  With more than 88-years of service to the East Tennessee region, MKAA plays a vital role in supporting the area's air transportation system.  Centrally located within a day's drive or short flight of major U.S. cities, our airports are positioned for continued growth and innovation.  If you're interested in contributing to the future success of TYS and DKX, we encourage you to explore this opportunity further.

The Position:

The Telecommunicator I is responsible for receiving and dispatching communications using radio and telephone systems to support Public Safety Officers and Airport Security Officers in responding to alarms and incidents.  This role handles both routine and emergency calls related to crimes, fires, medical needs, rescue situations, FAA flight information, maintenance issues, parking services, and general inquiries - determining the appropriate priority, location, jurisdiction, and agency for response.  The position also monitors the Airport's CCTV system, crash phone, and security systems, taking appropriate action based on the nature of each situation.  Additional responsibilities include initiating work orders for Authority personnel and airport tenants, coordinating communication between Federal, State, and local agencies, and ensuring timely emergency notifications to on-and-off airport response partners.  The Telecommunicator I maintains accurate daily logs, reports, recordings, and essential records, including employee data and emergency contact information.  ***Must be available for night and weekend work.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain detailed electronic logs of calls and events using Microsoft Word and other computer programs.

  • Enter maintenance work orders into the airport's work order system and print reports from the airport reporting system.

  • Maintain operational records in various computer systems.

  • Contact contracted companies for escalator and elevator repairs and notify airport maintenance when issuing priority work orders.

  • Log lost and found items in the computer system and respond to related phone inquiries.

  • Assist with airport security by monitoring access control systems and operating surveillance equipment.

  • Utilize access control and camera software while handling private and security-sensitive information.

  • Implement the MKAA emergency response plan and dispatch first responders as needed.

  • Permit access to outside agencies during emergency or operational situations.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of airport operations, phone systems, fire alarm systems, emergency procedures, and basic aircraft information, along with an understanding of departmental areas of responsibility.  They should be familiar with radio consoles, portable radios, security procedures and policies, the layout of airport property and buildings, and the use of access control alarm workstations.  Strong oral and written communication skills, customer service abilities, radio communication proficiency, and the capacity to multitask and prioritize effectively are essential for success in this role.  Ability to adapt, learn new skills, and handle several responsibilities simultaneously. ***Must be available for night and weekend work.
