Job Summary:
Panelmatic is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Testing Technician, Switchgear to join our Houston, TX team. This role is responsible for performing functional, electrical, and quality testing of low- and medium-voltage switchgear assemblies prior to shipment. The ideal candidate has strong experience in electrical systems, troubleshooting, and interpreting schematics, with a focus on safety, accuracy, and efficiency.
Job Duties:
Perform functional and electrical testing of switchgear, motor control centers (MCCs), and control panels in accordance with engineering specifications, UL standards, and customer requirements
Verify proper operation of protective relays, breakers, control circuits, and instrumentation
Execute Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) with internal teams and customers when required
Identify, document, and troubleshoot electrical and mechanical issues, working closely with engineering and production teams to resolve discrepancies
Interpret and work from electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and layout drawings
Ensure all testing activities comply with safety standards (NFPA 70E, OSHA) and company procedures
Maintain accurate test reports, documentation, and quality records
Support continuous improvement initiatives related to testing processes and quality control
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required (technical certification or associate degree preferred)
5+ years of experience testing electrical control panels, switchgear, or similar equipment
Strong ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and diagrams independently
Hands-on experience with electrical test equipment (multimeters, megger, hipot testers, relay test sets, etc.)
Working knowledge of low- and medium-voltage systems
Familiarity with UL 508A, UL 891, or similar standards
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate degree in Electrical Technology or related field
Experience with protective relays (SEL, ABB, Schweitzer, etc.) and relay testing software
Knowledge of PLC systems and basic programming/troubleshooting
Prior experience with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and customer interaction
NFPA 70E certification or formal electrical safety training
Experience with medium-voltage switchgear and power distribution systems
