Location: Fond du Lac Resource Management and Tribal Court Building – As designated
Reports To: Forest Manager
Probationary Period: 90 days – Full time; 120 days – Part time
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (hourly)
Classification: Child Related CA
Driver’s License: Level 2 – Driver’s License Required
Rate of Pay:  $29.87 to $33.60 hourly 


Responsibilities


  • Coordinates the annual timber harvest plan with the reservation forester.

  • Conducts pre-sale inspections of assigned timber sales from the harvest plan.

  • Carries out timber sale preparation including timber cruise, boundary line location, harvest area locations.

  • Completes timber sales appraisals

  • Supervises the GIS technician and Inventory Technician, including completing time cards, approving /disapproving leave, doing disciplinary action and mediation when necessary.

  • Is able to respond to wildfires during times of high fire danger

  • Assists the Forest Manager with project proposals

  • Assists the fuels crew with implementing project proposals

  • Completes accomplishment reports to BIA and FDL resource management.

  • Assists the inventory technician with accomplishing forest inventory

  • Represents Fond du Lac at collaboration meetings and events regarding timber sales and forest development projects with other agencies such as the forest service, county and state DNR

  • Administers timber Sales at Fond du Lac including enforcing contracts, interacting professionally with loggers and other forestry agencies.

  • Where appropriate drafts Power of attorney Forms, and letters to the owners.

  • Assists the Minnesota Agency in collecting the required 51% approval on individually owned allotments.

  • Works with Minnesota Chippewa Tribe (MCT) Tribal Operations and Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Realty to obtain information on allotments and locating heirs.

  • Under the assistance of the Reservation Forester, the timber sales forester will prepare reports and documents required for sale approval. These reports and documents include the Forest Officer’s Report, Draft Timber Sale Contract, National Environmental Protect Act (NEPA) compliance, and draft prospectus for advertising.

  • Administers timber sales as assigned including, scaling, timber sale inspections, Entering Scale into Timber Sales Accounting program. Producing the Report of Timber Cut, completing pick-up scale, and completing documents for sale closure.

  • Operates a Reservation owned or leased vehicle in the performance of duties.

  • Appropriate work attire is required.

  • Must attend all mandatory department meetings.

  • Ensures confidentiality of financial records and for all records for employees and/or clients.

  • Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.

  • Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.

  • Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community.

  • Required to maintain proper attendance including reporting to work on time in accordance with applicable policies.

  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.

  • Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.




Qualifications

  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the US is required.

           o Eligibility determined by FDL’s insurance company.



  • Associate's degree in forestry or closely related field; and 4 years’ experience in Forestry or closely related field is required.

          Or

  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry or closely related field and 2 years’ experience in Forestry or closely related field is required.

  • National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) FFT2 wildland firefighter certification is required; if not certified at the time of hire must become certified within probationary period.

  • Excellent knowledge of Minnesota trees- what conditions tree species thrive in, how to identify them and read sites, what silvicultural practices work best with the functioning of the forests they grow in is required.

  • Good field skills- navigation, self-awareness, and the ability to work independently in a remote environment for long periods of time is required.

  • Knowledge of biological, cultural, social, and economic considerations of forestry within the reservation and the region is required.

  • Knowledge of and the ability to use a wide range of forestry methods, techniques and precedents are required.

  • Demonstrate communicative skills, which will enable the incumbent to effetely interrelate with the professional forestry staff, tribal representatives, individual loggers, allotment owners and the general public is preferred.

  • Experience in all factors of timber sales is required.

  • Knowledge of computers and computer software including word processors, spreadsheets, databases, geographic information systems in required.

  • Knowledge of the basics of Fire Behavior and Fire Fighting Techniques is required.

  • Knowledge of Native American communities, customs and beliefs is preferred.

  • GIS certificate is preferred.

  • Degree from a SAF accredited institution is preferred.

  • Position requires on call availability.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.

  • Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.

  • Attention to detail and accuracy is required.

  • Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.

  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.

  • Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.

  • Subject to immunization review and submitted proof of required vaccinations.

          PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:



  • Ability to pass annual physical fitness test (pack test) in order to be Nationally Qualified for firefighting.

  • Lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring at least average agility and dexterity.

  • Walking over uneven terrain, standing, running, bending, stooping, climbing, pushing and pulling for long periods of time.

  • Moderate risks encountered in walking over rough terrain, and the loading, unloading and transportation of forestry equipment and machinery.

  • Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material.

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, including work in adverse or extreme weather conditions.
