Job Description - Tooling Engineer

Description

SUMMARY OF POSITION: We are seeking a Tooling Engineer who will lead the design, development, and qualification of high-precision injection molding tools. This role is essential to our continued growth and innovation in precision molding, focusing on launching new molds and ensuring they meet stringent quality and performance standards. The ideal candidate will work closely with internal engineering, quality, and production teams, as well as external toolmakers, to deliver robust, efficient, and repeatable mold solutions.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties as assigned):

  • Lead the design, development, and qualification of new precision injection molds, from concept through production launch.
  • Translate part design and customer requirements into mold specifications and collaborate on mold design reviews.
  • Develop and manage tooling project timelines, budgets, and vendor deliverables.
  • Issue RFQs for new tools and collaborate with suppliers to ensure technical feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and manufacturability.
  • Coordinate tool trials, sampling, and validation activities, including First Article Inspection (FAI) and process development.
  • Evaluate tool performance and implement design changes or corrective actions to meet dimensional and performance criteria.
  • Partner with Quality and Manufacturing Engineering teams to ensure tools are capable of meeting tight tolerances and micro-molding requirements.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain to manage tool builds, ensure material readiness, and resolve vendor capacity constraints.
  • Track and document tooling progress, qualification status, and any deviations or corrective actions.
  • Support DFM (Design for Manufacturability) activities and mold flow analysis to optimize tool design before fabrication.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of current and emerging technologies in injection molding and tooling best practices.

EDUCATION AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Plastics Engineering, or related field; equivalent experience considered.
  • 2+ years of experience in tooling design, mold development, or precision injection molding preferred.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor) and mold design principles.
  • Experience with GD&T, FAI processes, and part validation methods.
  • Familiarity with mold flow analysis software (e.g., Moldex3D, Autodesk Moldflow) a plus.
  • Knowledge of micro-molding, high-cavitation molds, or complex part geometries is highly desirable.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills; able to effectively coordinate with cross-functional teams and vendors.
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tooling projects with attention to detail and adherence to tight timelines
