Job Description - Tow Truck Driver

A 1099 tow truck driver is a self-employed, independent contractor responsible for providing towing and roadside assistance services, managing their own equipment, scheduling, and business operations, rather than being a company employee. Key duties include responding to calls for disabled or illegally parked vehicles, safely operating and maintaining a tow truck, securing and transporting vehicles, completing paperwork, and maintaining strong customer service and communication skills.

  • Schedule: Have an availability to work Monday-Friday. No weekends or holidays required!
  • Vehicle Transportation: Safely operate a tow truck to pick up and transport vehicles that are disabled, damaged, or involved in an accident.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Conduct regular inspections, minor repairs, and cleaning of their own tow truck and associated equipment.
  • Paperwork & Documentation: Complete necessary job logs, service reports, and financial paperwork for each tow.
  • Customer Interaction: Communicate effectively with clients, dispatchers, and emergency personnel to understand needs and provide clear service updates.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures during towing operations and while driving.
    Skills and Qualifications
  • Vehicle Recovery & Transportation: Safely operate a tow truck to pick up and transport vehicles that are disabled, damaged, or illegally parked.
  • Roadside Assistance: Provide services such as jump-starts, tire changes, and fuel delivery to stranded motorists.
  • Light Commercial Class D License: a commercial driver's license (CDL) category for operating light commercial vehicles not classified as Class A, B, or C
  • Driving & Mechanical Knowledge: Strong driving skills, familiarity with towing procedures, and a basic understanding of vehicle mechanics are necessary.
  • Customer Service: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are crucial for interacting with customers and building a professional reputation.
  • Problem-Solving & Time Management: The ability to assess situations quickly, plan routes efficiently, and manage time effectively to meet client needs.
  • Physical Stamina: Must be able to handle the physical demands of the job, including lifting, bending, and working in various weather conditions.
  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with navigation systems and dispatch software.
    The "1099" Aspect
  • Independent Contractor: A 1099 tow truck driver is a self-employed business owner, not an employee.
  • Self-Management: Responsible for their own business operations, including scheduling, equipment ownership/leasing, maintenance, and all associated expenses.
  • Tax Status: Receives a Form 1099-NEC for reporting income to the IRS, as opposed to a W-2 form for employees.
  • Flexibility & Control: The role offers a flexible schedule but requires a strong work ethic and the ability to work independently to manage a successful business.
  • Valid Driver’s License with endorsement. CDL License also accepted.
  • Must be 21+ for interstate driving; 18+ acceptable for intrastate.
  • Clean driving record and ability to pass background check and drug screening.
  • Ability to lift, secure, and operate towing equipment in varied weather conditions.
  • Previous towing, recovery, or commercial driving experience a plus.
  • Strong reliability, safety focus, and customer service skills.
