Job Description - Traditional Practitioner

Description

Job Summary

Traditional Practitioner position is responsible for providing Cultural and Traditional services to promote basic Diné principles such as respect, relationships, reverence and responsibility.

Full Time - Exempt

Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm (Hours may vary based on days/times needs of the sensitive services)

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assists residents with adjusting to residential program and prevent unplanned discharges.
  • Take a trauma-informed care approach.
  • Educate and/or recommend prayer ceremonies to ensure traditional healing and wellness of residents in services.
  • Coordinates with clinical and interdisciplinary team in support of residents’ care such as treatment goals, progress and referrals.
  • Provide information on Iiná (life teachings) with regard to health, healing, spirituality and family wellness.
  • Provides advisement on traditional teachings, types of ceremonies and treatment.
  • Responsible to refer resident to other Traditional Practitioners to perform protection prayer blessing ceremony as appropriate.
  • Responsible for the preparation of the traditional practice and work with the resident (and family) on the description of the ceremony.
  • Work with the clinical team and family to ensure support and involvement of the family.
  • Responsible for accompanying and providing support to the resident and family at the traditional prayer and/or ceremony.
  • Attends and participates in program interdisciplinary meetings and oversight in support of the milieu and individual residents.
  • Attends training, workshops, and conferences to enhance knowledge in traditional practices and teachings.
  • Complete accurate documentation on the same day as the date of service.
  • Promotes inclusion through Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Service Standards (CLAS)
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Navajo Traditional healing ceremonies.
  • Exceptional knowledge of Diné traditions, culture, philosophies and language.
  • Knowledge of Peacemaking Ceremony Process
  • Knowledge of the 12-Step approach to substance use counseling.
  • Skill in conducting and preparing traditional healing ceremonies and prayers.
  • Maintain the history and symbolism of Navajo traditions.
  • Ability to communicate in both Navajo and English languages.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Five (5) year experience as a traditional healing practitioner.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • The employee must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
