POSITION SUMMARY:

The Traffic Control Apprentice is a Union Position (if you are not yet a member, we can help facilitate the enrollment process).  The Traffic Control Apprentice will work under an experienced traffic control technician and lead hands- on training with directing traffic for road construction and or utility crews.

A Traffic Control Apprentice has the responsibility to protect the lives of our customers, motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists and themselves on the roadway. Our workforce needs to remain flexible in shifts, as your schedule may fluctuate during peak seasons to meet customer needs, the requirements of the industry, and comes with slow season in late fall through winter. 

POSITION DUTIES: 

• Maintain a consistent and unrelenting focus on safety throughout all job functions.


• Manage day to day work zone set up, maintenance and tear down.  


• Meeting or exceeding customer, state, federal and company expectations


• Follow company and state guidelines for effective, safe, well managed work zones.


• Drive company trucks as needed.


• Keep equipment in trucks well organized and in working order.


• Develop superior knowledge of work zone setup and Professional Flagging responsibilities.


• Willingness to follow direction, maintain a quick pace. 


• Provide the highest level of customer service to all customers. This includes on-time arrival and well managed work zones.

Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to recognize dangers using hearing and vision, being fully engaged and alert of their surroundings.


• Ability to handle stressful situations and take safe action to avoid serious injuries to any pedestrians, vehicles, customers, and employees.


• Ability to understand traffic signals/signs, traffic plans and customer requests.


• Ability to communicate with customers, the public, and with other team members.


• Punctuality, time management and willingness to work in a team.


• Capable of working outdoors in all weather conditions

Education and Experience: 

• High School Diploma or equivalent


• Must have valid driver’s license for at least 3 years (must be insurable through
  company insurance policy)


• No driving violations within 3 years


• No more than 1 moving violation within 3 years


• Flagging one year (preferred)

Language:

• English- read and write fluently.

Physical Requirements:

• Frequent lifting of heavy objects, ability to carry and place traffic cones to ensure the safety of the work zone. Lifting may be up to 50 lbs.


• Lift, carry, place, and assemble traffic control signs in the proper order to manage work zone traffic.


• Stand for long periods of time while flagging, in various weather conditions, and different times of day/night.


• Various nose decibel levels


• Stooping for prolonged periods of time.


• Dexterity in the use of hand and fingers


• Reaching, sitting, bending, pushing, pulling, talking, hearing and Vision (up close, at a distance, along the periphery)

Willingness to travel:

• 100% (required)
