Job Distinctions

Intermediate level technician. Possession of IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level II Certification (Field or Bench) (within six months for new hire).

Qualified to perform on-call duties as determined by journeyman/lead workers (within six months for new hires).

Duties and Responsibilities

Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform one or more of the activities described below:

• Troubleshoots, installs, maintains, modifies, calibrates, inspects, and repairs traffic control devices, street lighting and associated communication equipment.


• Constructs and assembles traffic control devices, street lighting and ancillary devices and performs other modifications to traffic control device operational equipment, exhibits and other devices.


• Operates electronic controlling, measuring, transmitting, testing and diagnostic equipment in a traffic control device operations setting.  


• Performs basic installation, modification, fabrication, repair and maintenance of electronic and/or electrical equipment used in traffic control devices, street lighting and traffic signal communication setting in accordance with ISA, FDOT, MUTCD and/or the National Electric Code (NEC).


• Performs advanced analysis and interpretation of operational signal equipment and test data and may edit traffic signal programming using specified software.


• Controls traffic signal operational processes using electronic software and applications such as scientific and analytic computer software, calculators, voltage and current meters, electronic probes, process multi-meters and specialized calibration equipment.


• Interprets and ensures compliance with established specifications, calculates data necessary for wiring systems, and requisitions supplies and materials needed to complete projects and assignments.


• Recommends electronic requirements in support of traffic control devices facilities and/or systems.


• May direct and/or oversee the work of lower level technicians and fellow technical maintenance employees and train lower level technicians and staff in all phases of a variety of electronic traffic signal control systems, street lighting, and traffic signal communication equipment.


• Prepares work schedules and coordinates maintenance schedule with operation’s staff as well as prepares technical reports of electronic operational issues.


• Provides written documentation and reports for compliance inspections.


• Performs other duties as designated.

Job Specifications

• Knowledge of local, state, and federal electronics compliance regulations related to traffic control devices, street lighting, and traffic signal communication systems as applicable to specific agency or department facilities.


• Knowledge of electrical safe work practices and procedures.


• Knowledge of the function and operation of electronic controlling, measuring, recording, transmitting, testing and diagnostic equipment related to traffic control devices, street lighting, and traffic signal communication systems.


• Knowledge of traffic signal controllers and ancillary equipment.


• Knowledge in the proper applications of instruments that control a testing process function.


• Knowledge of Radio Communications associated software & hardware.


• Knowledge of traffic control devices, street lighting and traffic signal communication controls systems within agency or department.


• Ability to troubleshoot and program with electronic related software.


• Ability to work with scientific and analytic computer software, calculators, voltage and current meters, electronic probes, process multi-meters and specialized calibration equipment, in an industrial and traffic signal operations setting.


• Ability to troubleshoot, edit, configure and program traffic control device systems such traffic signal controllers, video detection systems, fiber communication switches and UPS controllers with minimal supervision.


• Ability to interpret engineering plans, diagrams, schematic, and blue prints.


• Ability to work effectively with others.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to climb ladders, operate fork lift, back hoe, automotive and/or other heavy equipment as needed.


• Ability to work at heights of up to 50’ in an aerial lift or bucket truck.


• Ability to lift and carry up to 70lbs.


• Ability to work a variety of work schedules including evening shift, holidays, standby, emergency, and/or disaster situations.

Work Category

• Heavy Work- Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Minimum Qualifications Required

• Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate;  AND


• One year of formal vocational schooling in electronics or other relevant field; AND


• Three (3) years of experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of electronic equipment;

OR

• An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above; AND


• Possession of IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level II Certification (Field or Bench) within six months of hire; AND


• Possession of Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six months of hire.
