Job Description - Traffic Signal Technician


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential functions of this position satisfactorily. The individual in this position must be honest, follow non-discriminatory employment practices, and have a strong work ethic. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Construct and install new traffic signal systems, including trenching and laying conduit, drilling for foundations, erecting poles and mast arms, installing pole footings, pulling and installing wire, wiring poles and cabinets, setting pull boxes, and completing all related assembly tasks.
  • Maintain and repair existing traffic signals and related equipment, including camera detection systems, inductive loops and detectors, radio systems, railroad preemption, fire/optical preemption, signal wiring, controllers, and conflict monitors.
  • Install and maintain battery backup units for uninterrupted power supply (UPS) systems.
  • Set up and maintain compliant safety work zones in accordance with International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) guidelines when working near active traffic.
  • Participate in the oncall rotation and respond to afterhours service needs as assigned.
  • Obtain IMSA Traffic Signal Level III certification within two years of hire.
  • Install, maintain, and repair all traffic signal components, including controllers, poles, signal heads, conduit, wiring, vehicle detection systems, and other traffic control devices.
  • Program signal controllers and cabinet components in accordance with ownerprovided TSIs and successfully conduct bench testing of cabinets.
  • Train and mentor fellow employees on technical aspects of traffic signal systems, equipment, and operational procedures.
  • Supervises a crew of up to 5 employees, including subcontractors and prioritizes work.
  • Reads and follows plans, material lists and guidelines and applies necessary timelines.
  • Fulfills all regular and advanced installation/construction duties, including project layout, and completes required paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Organizes, supervises, leads, and trains employees to complete projects within established guidelines and time frames.
  • Enforces all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Enforces all client-required safety policies and procedures.
  • Complies with all company policies and procedures and safety requirements, including crewmember discipline and documentation.
  • Reviews electronic employee timecards for accuracy and compliance with company policies.
  • Communicates with employees/supervisors to resolve timecard issues in a timely manner.
  • Submits crewmembers’ timesheets to payroll by deadline.
  • Attends project meetings as required.
  • Submits daily logbooks, traffic logs and JSAs (job site analysis).
  • Maintains and inspects vehicles and equipment.
  • Communication with Inspectors and State Agencies.
  • Any other duties assigned as needed.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
  • Must possess good interpersonal skills
  • Good communications skills, both written and oral
  • Ability to read and understand gauges and other indicators
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems and offer solutions.
  • Strong critical thinking skills
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic math
  • Ability to manage time between two or more projects at one time
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions and procedures
  • Possess ability to read a tape measure and plan documents
  • The ability to apply knowledge and skills to achieve intended results
  • Must successfully complete the Traffic Control Technician certification as assigned by the company within the first year of employment
  • Must receive a Forklift certification within the first year of employment
  • Maintain a current CDL within the first year of employment
  • Must successfully complete HIPPA and Ethics training
  • Must be familiar with operation and maintenance of Mini Excavators, Skid Steers, Bucket Trucks, Diggers Derricks, and Truck Mounted Cranes for a roadway electrical contractor
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent or 5 years work experience in the role
  • Valid CDL driver’s license and Physical Card
  • Must meet the fleet policy driver eligibility requirements in order to be a company sanctioned driver
  • Must hold current First Aid, CPR, AED, and Flagger certification
  • Satisfactory background check
  • Available for on call needs as requested
  • The physical ability to immediately respond to emergency situations
