Job Description - Translator, Special Education Interpreter (185 Days)

  • Effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and school staff from diverse cultures or backgrounds in English and Spanish
  • Serve as interpreter for Special Education meetings and other parent and community meetings
  • Maintain the integrity of confidential information relating to students, staff, or district
  • Complete translation projects following guidelines for timeliness and accuracy
  • Translate technical information, legally mandated educational requirements, and special education terminology
  • Operate a telephone hotline and be able to assist callers in a prompt and cordial manner
  • Work collaboratively with other staff to complete translation and interpretation assignments as assigned by supervisor
  • Data collection, preparation and maintenance of accurate compliance records
  • Follow ethical codes that protect the confidentiality of the information
  • Compile terminology and information to be used in translations, including technical terms, and develop a glossary to be shared with peers
  • Act as an actively contributing team member and support the mission and work of the organization
  • Develop and deliver training programs for varying levels of individuals based on the department’s needs
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned
  • All federally funded incumbents of this position must comply with time and effort reporting requirements through personnel activity reports or periodic certification, as appropriate
  • Pursue continued development of skills and knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; high school diploma or GED, plus 60-college hours
  • Two years of experience as translator/interpreter in an academic or hospital environment preferred.  Demonstrated proficiency in English and Spanish, oral and written
  • At least 2-3 years of professional translation and interpretation experience in a school or medical environment
  • Must possess fluency in Spanish and English, correct language usage and pronunciation, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary
  • Ability to use transmitter and receiver equipment provided for simultaneous interpretation;
  • Knowledge of ARD/FIE procedures in a school setting, preferred
  • Strong organization, time management, prioritization, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Must possess exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Have regular and punctual attendance
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of district personnel, community organizations and agencies, students and parents
