All Levels: Engineer, Senior/Lead Engineer, or Principal Engineer
The Opportunity
We are seeking a Transmission System Planning Engineer to support the planning, analysis, and long-term reliability of a high-voltage electric transmission network.
In this role, you will perform power system studies, evaluate transmission system performance, identify reliability and capacity constraints, and develop solutions that support future system needs. You will work with transmission planning models and collaborate with engineering, operations, consultants, interconnected utilities, and other industry stakeholders.
This position may be filled at the Engineer, Senior/Lead Engineer, or Principal Engineer level based on experience and technical expertise.
What You'll Do
Perform power flow, contingency, voltage, transient stability, and related transmission planning studies.
Develop, maintain, and validate transmission planning models and study cases.
Identify thermal, voltage, stability, reliability, and capacity limitations and evaluate potential solutions.
Support long-range transmission planning and development of future system improvements.
Perform or lead generation interconnection, load service, feasibility, and system impact studies.
Evaluate transmission alternatives and develop recommendations for system improvements and capital projects.
Prepare technical reports and communicate study findings and engineering recommendations.
Coordinate technical studies with engineering, operations, consultants, customers, interconnected utilities, and regional organizations.
Participate in regional transmission planning activities and technical forums.
At senior levels, lead complex studies, review technical work, direct consultants, mentor engineers, and provide technical guidance.
What We're Looking For
Engineer
Bachelor's degree in Engineering; Electrical Engineering with a power systems emphasis preferred.
Entry-level through approximately 5 years of relevant power engineering experience.
Experience or academic background in power systems, transmission planning, power flow analysis, system modeling, or related areas.
Transmission planning or electric utility experience is preferred as experience level increases.
EIT/FE certification is preferred.
Senior / Lead Engineer
Bachelor's degree in Engineering; Electrical Engineering with a power systems emphasis preferred.
Typically 6–10+ years of relevant power engineering experience, including significant transmission planning experience.
Demonstrated experience independently performing or leading transmission planning studies.
Strong knowledge of power flow, contingency, voltage and stability analysis, transmission modeling, and system performance.
Experience with interconnection or system impact studies and applicable NERC/WECC requirements.
Experience providing technical guidance or mentoring engineers.
PE licensure is preferred.
Principal Engineer
Bachelor's degree in Engineering; Electrical Engineering with a power systems emphasis preferred.
Typically 10+ years of progressively responsible transmission system planning experience.
Expert-level knowledge of transmission planning, system modeling, power flow, contingency, stability, reliability, and long-range planning.
Demonstrated leadership of complex or high-impact transmission planning initiatives.
Ability to serve as a technical authority and advise stakeholders on transmission system risks, alternatives, and long-term planning decisions.
Experience mentoring engineers and establishing technical direction or planning practices.
PE licensure is strongly preferred.
Technical Experience
Candidates should bring experience appropriate to their level in areas such as:
Transmission system planning and modeling
Power flow and contingency analysis
Transient and voltage stability
Generation and load interconnections
Long-range transmission planning
NERC Reliability Standards and WECC criteria
