Job Description - Transportation Dispatcher





Description

Summary/Objective:

The dispatcher position schedule and dispatch freight, or for normal installation, service, or emergency repairs rendered outside the place of business. Duties may include using radio, telephone, or computer to transmit assignments and compiling statistics and reports on work progress.

Essential Functions:

 Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

1.Keep records, monitoring drivers' daily logs for errors or violations and monitoring their working hours and equipment availability.

2.Keep tabs on the weather at all drivers' locations to be able to flag potential issues, typically with the aid of numerous computer programs.

3.Serve as a reliable point of contact to balance drivers' health and safety with customer requirements.

4.Coordinate and manage the most efficient loads to remain cost-effective as a company, combining shipments based on their routes and timeline to minimize how many trucks and drivers are out.

5.Determine the best delivery methods and negotiate rates directly with vendors and customers and get the necessary documents and permits that drivers will need when shipping chemicals or livestock.

6.Provide daily and weekly reports to the Operations Manager.

Supervisory Responsibility: 

This position has direct supervisory responsibilities over all CDL drivers.

Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. 

Physical Demands: 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool, as necessary.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position. The hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., 40 hours per week. This is normally a full-time position, but dispatchers can literally be on call 24/7, available to step in should a driver become ill or is injured or if some other unforeseen event should occur. Additionally, drivers aren't on their routes only during business hours, so this job isn't always confined to Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Travel: Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.


Requirements

Required Education and Experience:

1.GED/High School diploma.

2.Minimum of 3 -5 years in a sales or sales support experience and 3 years in trucking and transportation rules and regulations.

3.Experience overseeing freight for at least 10 drivers at a time.

4.3 years of experience in dispatching. 

5. Bilingual- Spanish (REQUIRED)

Preferred Education and Experience:

1.Associate’s degree in transportation, supply chain management, or logistics.

2.Minimum of 5-7 years in a sales or sales support experience and 5 years in trucking and transportation rules and regulations.

3.Experience overseeing freight for at least 25 drivers at a time.

4.5 years of experience in dispatching.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications: Must be able to pass DOT physical exam and drug test.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance: Must be authorized to work in the United States of America
