Description of Work

This position functions as a Transportation Worker IV in addition to work performed at all prior levels. This position will serve as crew leader. This work is related to the preservation, maintenance, repair, and construction, of State-owned fixed and moveable bridges, culverts, and pipes 54 inches and larger within Division 2. This position is technical in nature and labor intensive. Employee will be required to work in diverse working environments, in all types of weather conditions, in and around heavy equipment, use power tools, and must be able to safely exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently. This position requires working in a close environment or independently, as needed. Employee will be expected to perform assigned tasks and follow oral and written instructions as directed by the supervisor. When inclement weather occurs, this position will be called upon to work nights and/or weekends to help in the snow and ice removal process.

Additional Expectations:
Must operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Employee will be expected to perform work safely while suspended at moderate heights, confined areas, over water, in water, in extreme heat and cold, and during inclement weather. Safety toe footwear is needed.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation if needed.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

  Salary Grade: NC08 / Recruitment Range: $37,782.00 to $66,120.00.  

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices
  • Demonstrated ability supervising and training others in equipment operations.
  • Working experience as the Lead Worker on a Bridge Crew without supervision.
  • Experience reading and interpreting plans, calculating quantities, and placing orders, plan reading and layout, directing drilling and cutting of holes, directing erection of steel beams and bridge components.
  • Experience serving as a lead in trenching and shoring operations.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
