Position Summary

The Transportation/Warehouse Associate Class-B operates a Food Bank Class-B commercial vehicle to safely, efficiently, and timely pick up and deliver food and other products throughout the Food Bank’s 34-county service area. This position is responsible for ensuring the safe handling, loading, transportation, and delivery of product while maintaining accurate documentation and compliance with all applicable transportation, safety, and Food Bank requirements. 

The Transportation/Warehouse Associate Class-B also supports warehouse operations as needed, including receiving, stocking, picking, loading, and organizing product, and provides professional and courteous service to Food Bank partners, agencies, and community members.

 Primary Responsibilities 

80% - As an ambassador for the Food Bank and always representing the organization in a friendly and professional manner, perform daily route in the most efficient and safe manner possible while adhering to all DOT/FMCSA laws and regulations, food safety regulations and Food Bank standard operating procedures.

• Utilize technology and equipment provided by the Food Bank to record all applicable Roadnet data required (e.g., time arrived, time departed, etc.) for each stop (pickup or delivery), as well as accurately and consistently record all time plots, route discrepancies, and route notes on the Roadnet app. 
• Maintain all appropriate federal/state mandated administrative logs (eg., transportation logs, pre-trip procedures, quarterly vehicle inspections, maintenance schedule, receipts, and invoices) as required. 
• Communicate with the Dispatcher any changes and all incidents that may impact route appointment times.

20% - Assist with the loading and unloading of vehicles (includes vehicles from other organizations) when in the warehouse, and effectively disburse product into appropriate locations in the warehouse.

• Ensure that all safety policies and procedures are carried out. Maintain a safe and accident-free workplace environment.
• Maintain warehouse equipment and report any equipment issues to appropriate supervisor immediately.

Minimum Requirements 

Education:

• High school diploma, GED or equivalent. A minimum of five years of meaningful experience in commercial driving, warehouse operations, distribution, transportation, or a related field may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Certifications:

• Forklift Certification or ability to get certified upon hiring.
• Ability to successfully complete training and obtain required powered warehouse equipment certifications. Training will be provided.

Experience:

• 5+ years of professional commercial driving experience and demonstrated ability to safely, efficiently, and legally operate a vehicle with a Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of up to 33,000 lbs. required. Experience using a liftgate is preferred.
• 3+ years of experience working in a warehouse, food distribution, food service, or other regulated environment.

Additional Requirements:

• Valid North Carolina Class B CDL driver’s license and excellent driving record.
• Must meet all applicable requirements for operating a Class B commercial motor vehicle and successfully complete the required background and drug screening.
• Ability to perform basic math calculations accurately to support inventory management, order processing, and product handling.
• Ability to successfully complete all required food safety training.

Physical Demands

While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to:

• Talk, hear, and interact without deliberate impediment (e.g., wearing or listening to headphones, etc.).
• Sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel.
• Lift and carry loads of up to 60 pounds for short distances (less than 50 feet) without difficulty.
• To reach for and/or lift upward with their arms and hands to heights of 6 feet or greater.
• To twist their body right or left, often repeatedly.

The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, and to stoop, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

Work Environment

General warehouse environments, including refrigerator, produce cooler, and freezer with temperatures ranging from -10 degrees Fahrenheit to 41 degrees Fahrenheit.  Some protective clothing will be provided and must be worn for this work.

• While performing the essential functions of the job, the employee is required to work in a warehouse setting.
• The employee will be required to interact with Food Bank personnel in the warehouse(s).
• The employee will occasionally be exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles.
• Safety toe footwear with non-skid soles is required.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
• The warehouse can be extremely cold at times and extremely hot during the summer months.
