Job Description - Trauma Nurse Coordinator & Transport Navigator

This position is responsible for coordinating trauma care management across the continuum of trauma care, including planning and implementing of clinical protocols / practice management guidelines, monitoring care of in-hospital patients, and serving as a resource for clinical practice.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Current Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided or current multi-state Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).

2. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or obtain within 30 days of hire date. 

3. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification or obtain within 30 days of hire date. 

4. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification or due within 30 days of hire date. 

3. Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) through Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) within 30 days of hire date. 

EXPERIENCE:

1. Three (3) years trauma clinical experience (Emergency Department or Critical Care). 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN)

2. CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) or CCRN (Critical Care Registered Nurse).

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.  They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties.  Other duties may be assigned.

1. Coordinates the trauma care management across the continuum of trauma care. 

2. Works with and reviews cases prepared to ensure compliance with all registry related Trauma Center Designation Criteria.

3. Provides for inter-facility staff development, participating in case review, and standardizing practice guidelines.

4. Develops and disseminates educational programs for emergency healthcare professionals to gain competence in injury/violence prevention.  Provides education opportunities for the general public in ways to reduce injury or violence.

5. Monitors clinical outcomes and system issues for Performance Improvement.

6. Manages, as appropriate, the operational aspects of Trauma Services.

7. Assists the Trauma Registry to facilitate PI activities through the collection, coding, scoring and developing processes.

8. Acts as a consultant/liaison by working with all departments to assist in the care of the trauma patient.

9. Participates in research selection, analysis and distribution of findings.

10. Participates in the development of trauma care systems at the community, state, provincial or national levels.

11. Communicates and interacts with patients, families, visitors, physicians, departmental and hospital staff and the public in general in a manner that demonstrates professionalism and concern for the individuals' need(s).

12. Participates in Quality initiatives to help assess and improve the services provided and compliance with regulatory requirements. Reports results to appropriate administrative levels.

1. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends minimizing the need for employees to manually lift patients, and limit safe patient handling to 35 pounds. All transfers, lifts and re-positioning will be completed utilizing the lift equipment and/or other patient handling aids as indicated by the patient’s profile and appropriate algorithms.

2. Heavy/Hard work: Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 35+lbs.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge of relevant scientific principles, established standards of care and/or research findings.

3. Knowledge of and appropriate application of the nursing process.

4. Knowledge of professional theory, practice and procedure.

5. Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, physicians, and other employees.
