Tribal Monitor (Tribal Member Only)

SUMMARY:

The Tribal Monitor will be assigned to development/construction projects to participate and obtain firsthand knowledge of archaeological excavations and construction in areas that are known to have high probability for encountering cultural resource material. In addition to participation on construction projects, during year one the monitor will assist the THPO with developing a reservation wide “Cultural Resource Monitoring Plan”.  The developed CRMP will be utilized to help protect known cultural resource sites deemed valuable to the Prairie Island Indian Community. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

The following duties and responsibilities are not meant to be all inclusive and may be adjusted to meet business needs.

• Monitor all ground disturbing activity including grading, grubbing, weed abatement, trenching and any excavation as outlined in project descriptions (this may include previously disturbed and undisturbed areas)


• Ability to recognize cultural resource materials, human remains, village site, midden deposits; must have the ability to read maps


• Help to ensure Native American human remains and associated funerary objects are treated with culturally appropriate manner


• Attend/participate in job-related conferences & training resulting in some travelling and overnight stays


• Perform a wide variety of secretarial and clerical services, assisting with administrative duties as assigned


• Operate a variety of office machines including but not limited to microcomputers, printers, copiers and GIS equipment


• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School Diploma or GED


• Prairie Island enrolled tribal member in good standing


• Must have completed the Cultural Resource Monitor Educational Training


• Basic knowledge of current local research methods and knowledge of state, federal and local tribal legislation pertaining to cultural resource protection


• Excellent written and verbal communication skills


• Strong computer skills Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook)


• Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision


• Ability to work well within the existing team and government structure


• Sensitive to Native American Culture


• Must pass drug screen (UA) and a criminal background check


• Valid driver’s license and proof of insurability

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:*

• Must have the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds


• Must be able to walk, stand or sit for long periods throughout the day


• Must be able to hike various distances with packs and/or equipment


• Must have ability to operate field equipment and tools


• Must be able to push, pull and grasp objects routinely


• Must be able to bend and crouch frequently


• Ability to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions

REQUIRED TRAINING:

• Effectively Handling Harassment training


• Any position-related training as determined by department manager

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

• Work is performed in an indoors and outdoors and may include exposure to extreme weather conditions
