JOB TITLE: Level II Sonographer 

STATUS: Part-Time or Full-Time 

TYPE: On site 

REPORTS TO: Clinic Manager 

PURPOSE: 

The UIMG Level II Sonographer is credentialed, experienced, and functions as a compassionate intermediate level sonographer, taking on the interactive role as a healthcare provider of diagnostic and screening ultrasound exams. This role operates under the delegated authority of a Level III sonographer or clinical manager. Demonstrating competencies in one or more specialties for performing diagnostic ultrasound protocol exams, the Level II Sonographer is expected to utilize sound judgement in problem solving and reasoning while independently conducting diagnostic exams. Additionally, Level II Sonographer collaborates with the clinic manager and/or lead sonographer in training new hires or externship students. 

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS / COMPETENCIES: 

Individual must be professional in all aspects of the position including appearance, demeanor, and attitude and consistently display the highest level of integrity.

• Graduated from an accredited ultrasound program 
• Have >2 years of scanning experience in a hospital, clinic, lab setting, with solid experience (confidence/competence) in performing routine and more complex exams within the scope of practice for their specialty 
• Registered or registry eligible through ARDMS, ARRT or CCI credential (Test scheduled/passed within 90 days of hire) 
• Ability to prioritize, multi-task, perform well under pressure, meet deadlines, and work a flexible schedule 
• Must possess strong oral and written communication skills 
• Demonstrate technical and clinical competency during a scanning interview 
• Demonstrate technical and clinical competence for routine exams in specialty trained for 
• Demonstrate ability to identify and optimize more common pathologies 
• Ability to help other sonographers with additional images on more complex or difficult patients 
• Demonstrate proficiency with computer skills and software programs used for documentation and report generation 
• Proactively demonstrate a commitment to professional growth and lifeline learning; can include increasing knowledge in advanced procedures or other specialties, joining societies, teaching others, getting an advanced degree 

First 90 days:  

• Obtain credentialling and demonstrate competence in the specialty exams trained for 
• Assimilate to the clinical workflow and perform collaborative duties to help run the lab efficiently 
• Demonstrate ability to elicit a relevant clinical history and review previous ultrasound exams  
• Use sonographic reasoning/judgement in problem solving and drawing technical conclusions on exams 
• Must demonstrate proficiency/competency in physics and instrumentation of specified ultrasound equipment  
• Must demonstrate proper patient positioning, patient care and prober ergonomics competency  
• Must demonstrate proficiency and competency in performing routine normal exam protocols  
• Must demonstrate clinical competency in filling out the technical worksheets and presenting US cases  
• Perform a complete Adult Transthoracic Echocardiogram according to ASE practice guidelines and UIMG protocol, accurately, completely, and consistently within the allotted amount of time (CVS) 
• Identify, optimize, measure, common pathologies with ability to verbalize and document relevant technical findings (CVS) 

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Foster a collaborative and respective team environment with co-workers and externs 
• Prepare the examination room for the patient and use equipment in accordance with infectious disease policies and procedures 
• Must greet patients and escort them to the appropriate examination room 
• Obtain a detailed patient history and explain the process of the examination to patients 
• Conduct diagnostic ultrasounds by following the appropriate protocol as established by UIMG 
• Successfully upload studies to be accessed and read by the radiologist 
• Upon completion of examinations the sonographer must escort patients back to the waiting area to complete the appointment 
• Clean machines and probes following sterilization protocols 
• Maintain inventory and order supplies 
• Excellent customer service 
• Comply with all regulatory agencies 
• Follow all HIPPA regulations and ensure staff and students do the same 
• Assist with the orientation and training of new staff sonographers 
• Provide a quality experience for externs as outlined in the training externs policy 
• Sonographer must be with students during patient or volunteer ultrasounds exams 
• Sonographers are responsible to assure students have cleaned, set up and restocked exam rooms 
• Assist students with questions about protocols, procedures and policies, and provide constructive feedback 
• Demonstrate respect and empathy towards students, acknowledging and accommodating their diverse personal differences and educational needs 
• Monitor student progress, report academic success issues and code of conduct violations to Clinical Manager using the appropriate forms and procedures 
• Perform quality control procedures to ensure the US equipment operate appropriately 
• Contact management if there are equipment issues 
• Document and incidental findings that might impact patient safety or patient care and provide information to the interpreting MD.  
• Ensure sonography exam results meet UIMG diagnostic standards according to protocol 
• Ensure the technical findings and the final result do not have discrepancies 
• Maintain CME’s and credentialing status 
• Be familiar with UIMG protocols, ASE.org practice guidelines (CVS) 
• Be familiar with UIMG protocols, AIUM.org practice guidelines, SDMS.org professional guidelines (DMS) 
• Additional duties as assigned by Clinic Manager and Diagnostic Radiologist 
• Fulfill terms of new hire agreement with UIMG
