Job Description - UI/UX Design Engineer

Description

Summary

The UI/UX Design Engineer is an individual contributor with a background in interaction design, responsible for creating and iterating intuitive and visually appealing user interfaces for Elixir products, applications, and interactive media. The ideal candidate will combine front end engineering with UX principles, and frequently collaborate with designers, product managers, researchers, and back-end engineers. They may also conduct user testing, A/B testing, and other forms of research in collaboration with the UX team. 

The UI/UX Design Engineer’s responsibilities include gathering user requirements, designing graphic elements and building navigation components. To be successful in this role, one should have prior experience with design software and wireframe tools. 

Essential Functions

Under general supervision of the Executive Managing Director, Release Management, the essential functions include:

  • Collaborate with product design, product managers, software engineers, and other stakeholders to define and implement innovative user experiences for our digital products. 
  • Create wireframes, prototypes, and design mock-ups to effectively communicate interaction and design ideas. 
  • Develop user flows, information architecture, and interactive prototypes to demonstrate and validate design concepts. 
  • Work closely with developers to ensure seamless implementation of user interfaces, providing guidance and support throughout the development process. 
  • Gather and evaluate user requirements, in collaboration with product managers, product owners and engineers. 
  • Illustrate design ideas using storyboards, process flows and sitemaps. 
  • Design graphic user interface elements, like menus, tabs, and widgets 
  • Conduct user research, usability testing, and gather feedback to inform the design process and make data-driven decisions. 
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies to continuously improve our design processes and methodologies. 
  • Create original graphic designs (e.g., images, sketches, and tables) 
  • Prepare and present rough drafts to internal teams and key stakeholders. 
  • Identify and troubleshoot UX problems (e.g., responsiveness) 
  • Conduct layout adjustments based on user feedback. 
  • Adhere to style standards on fonts, colors, and images. 
  • Advocate for the importance of user-centered design within the organization and champion user experience principles throughout the product development lifecycle.

Competencies

  • Solid understanding of user-centered design principles, information architecture, and interaction design best practices. 
  • Experience conducting user research, usability testing, and analyzing user feedback. 
  • Effective communication skills and ability to present and defend design decisions to various stakeholders. 
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a cross-functional team environment. 
  • Familiarity with front-end development technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) is a plus but not mandatory. 
  • Up-to-date knowledge of design software like Figma, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. 

Requirements

Required education and experience

  • Proven experience in UX design and interaction design, with a strong portfolio displaying innovative and visually appealing digital products
  • Team spirit, effective communication skills to collaborate with various stakeholders
  • Good time-management skills 

Preferred education and experience

  • Bachelor's or a Master's degree in human-computer Interaction, Interaction Design, UX Design, or related field
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment is a plus

Work environment

The work is performed in an office environment and may be distracting at times with others conversing. Work may also be done at vendors locations on occasion. Work environment could be in Elixir’s office, working from home, or a hybrid of both

Physical demands

This position requires hours of computer screen time, hearing, speaking, and sitting or standing at a desk.?

Expected hours of work

Generally, regular business hours plus some evening hours for global conference calls and meetings. Additional hours on weekends or holidays may be required on a seasonal basis to meet business needs.
