Job Function Summary:

Involves the supervision or management of modalities in medical imaging. Involves the use of imaging to diagnose and treat diseases seen within the body. Includes a variety of imaging techniques such as X-ray radiography, bone density, ultrasound, MRI, mammography, neuro interventional radiology, interventional radiology (special procedures), nuclear medicine, and computed tomography (CT).

Generic Scope

The Ultrasound Supervisor provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees. Functions as advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives.

Custom Scope

Provides supervision to Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, Walnut Creek and San Ramon sonographers in a radiology modality (e.g. X-ray radiography, ultrasound, MRI, mammography and computed tomography (CT)). May also include supervision of radiology technical support staff. Oversees employees, enforces policies and procedures, and monitors productivity. Supervises staff productivity and performance; resolves or escalates daily clinical, and operational issues.

  Supervises licensed technologists providing diagnostic and patient care services
  Monitors staff utilization and productivity, reviews test results to ensure appropriate application of equipment and imaging systems
  Oversees operations of radiology services, ensuring adherence to productivity and quality standards, as well as internal policy and external regulations
  Adjusts protocols as needed to achieve high quality results
  Participates in quality improvement initiatives
  Recommends improvements to departmental procedures and policies to provide patients with the highest quality services
  Communicates regularly across services to assure quality diagnostic services, collaborates with multidisciplinary teams related to improvements in patient care or operations
  Participates in recruiting and conducts new employee orientation
  Evaluates performance and competency and defines development goals
  Recommends changes in staffing and budget to ensure the efficient operation of Radiology Lab
  Serves as a role model for assigned staff
  Trains radiology technologists on new techniques, systems, operations and regulations
  Mentors staff in meeting professional goals and developing growth areas
  Consults with radiology leaders on developing strategies for performance improvement
  Assists management in coordinating staff development, training, and competency assessment


Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesReq / Pref
Demonstrated subject matter knowledge of a radiology modality 
Ability to apply principles to an acute care setting to ensure operations meet regulatory standards 
In-depth knowledge of radiology equipment in order to operate and monitor all relevant technology 
Strong knowledge of medical center, HR and UC policies and processes 
Knowledge and ability to monitor compliance with relevant internal policies and external regulations 
Demonstrated leadership skills in training and guiding employees on radiology modality techniques 
Motivates and inspires staff to improve laboratory services 
Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment 
Ability to organize assigned staff and unit operations in an efficient and effective manner 
Skills to coordinate schedules of the patient, doctor, technicians, and nurse to serve the patient in a timely manner 
Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with physicians, researchers, radiology technicians, and other clinical staff 
Interpersonal skills to work with a variety of patient populations and show sensitivity 
Skills to diagnose and troubleshoot equipment issues and software malfunctions in order to contact appropriate service personnel 
Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions within defined procedures and policies through critical thinking process 
Verbal and written communication skills to explain technical radiology concepts, actively listen, persuade, advise, and counsel
