Job Description - Ultrasound Technician

Urology Austin is seeking a full-time Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join our high-performing clinical team in Austin, TX. This role is ideal for a provider who takes pride in delivering compassionate, comprehensive care and is committed to helping patients improve their health and quality of life. POSITION SUMMARY:
We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Sonographer to join our growing urology team. This role involves independently performing abdominal, renal, and scrotal ultrasound exams in a fast-paced, patient-centered environment. The ideal candidate will be ARDMS-registered and comfortable traveling between various Urology Austin locations.

ROLE QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS)
  • Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience in a hospital or outpatient setting
  • Current CPR certification
  • Strong written and verbal communication skill
Preferred::
  • Prior experience in urology
  • Familiarity with PACS and MedInformatix systems
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBLITIES:
Clinical Duties: 
  • Independently perform high-quality abdominal, renal, and scrotal ultrasounds
  • Prepare and explain procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort
  • Review patient history and prior imaging before each exam
  • Follow established sonography protocols and ARDMS standards
  • Ensure appropriate positioning and image capture for accurate diagnostic results

​​​​​​​Documentation & Reporting:

  • Upload diagnostic images to PACS and EMR systems
  • Document findings, procedures, and communications in the EMR
  • Complete and upload sonographic reports to designated platforms
  • Communicate any urgent or time-sensitive findings directly to the physician

​​​​​​Equipment & Compliance:

  • Maintain cleanliness and stock of ultrasound work area
  • Calibrate and monitor ultrasound equipment; report any malfunctions promptly
  • Stay current on all required clinic trainings and certifications
  • ​​​​​​​Follow HIPAA and infection control protocols at all times

Scheduling & Workflow:

  • Manage an average patient load of 10 ultrasounds per day
  • Ensure patients are seen on time and coordinate rescheduling as needed
  • Provide flexible coverage across various clinic sites in the Austin/Round Rock area
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Performance Requirements:

Knowledge:

  • Medical office procedures and clinical protocols
  • Sonographic anatomy, physics, terminology, and knobology
  • Patient safety standards and HIPAA compliance

Skills:

  • Diagnostic-level sonographic image acquisition
  • Professional communication and patient interaction
  • Maintaining boundaries (e.g., not interpreting results to patients)

Abilities:

  • Communicate clearly with physicians and clinical staff
  • Work independently and manage time efficiently across multiple sites
  • Demonstrate compassion and professionalism with a diverse patient population
  • Make appropriate decisions based on clinical findings without direct supervision

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, reaching, and fine motor use
  • Must be able to lift or move up to 40 lbs for patient care or equipment handling
  • Requires close vision, color vision, and depth perception
  • Occasional patient positioning may be required

Work Conditions:

  • Outpatient clinical setting in a private exam/procedure room
  • 40-minute appointments are allotted for each ultrasound to allow for scanning, documentation, and patient interaction
  • Minimal add-ons or emergencies; majority of schedule is pre-booked
  • Well-lit, well-ventilated environment with moderate noise level
  • Regular contact with patients and staff from diverse backgrounds
  • ​​​​​​​Travel required across Austin and Round Rock area clinics; mileage reimbursement available per clinic policy
