The opportunity

We currently have an opportunity for an Underwriter to join our Contract Surety team based remotely in California. Under technical supervision and within specific, limited authority, this role is responsible for reviewing moderately complex contract surety risks to determine acceptance of applications. With guidance, the Underwriter evaluates financial strength, creditworthiness, and project performance to determine risk acceptability and pricing. Some of the Underwriter responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Underwrite new and renewal contract surety submissions, analyzing contractor financial statements, work-in-progress schedules, credit reports, and project details.


• Make informed decisions to accept, decline, or modify risks within assigned authority, in alignment with underwriting strategy and company guidelines.


• Manage a profitable book of contract surety business through portfolio reviews and producer performance evaluations.


• Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, agents, and contractors to support growth and retention goals.


• Collaborate with internal teams (claims, legal, actuarial) to ensure comprehensive account management.


• Monitor market trends, competitor activity, and industry developments in construction and bonding.


• Represent Intact at industry events and agency visits to maintain visibility and strengthen market presence.

The expertise you bring

• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or related field.


• 2–3 years of underwriting experience in contract surety or related lines.


• Understanding of contractor financials, credit analysis, and construction industry practices.


• Strong relationship-building and communication skills.


• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Our salary ranges are determined by many factors including location, role, experience and skillset of the candidate. The following ranges displayed reflect the target base salary for new hires; however, your recruiter will provide more specific compensation details during the hiring process. The typical base salary range for this position is: $72,000 - $102,000 based on the factors aforementioned. For candidates located in San Francisco, CA; Washington DC; our Massachusetts based offices and the New York City metro area, the base salary range is $91,000 - $106,000. In addition to base salary, full time Intact employees are also eligible for bonus potential and a full range of benefits to include but not limited to:
