Job Summary

15M is a fast-pace 24-bed acuity adaptable neuroscience specialty care unit that services adult step down and acute care patients.

One of the 24th bed is reserved for Women's Health (OB, GYN, GynOnc) patient.

UCSF Neurology and Neurosurgery is ranked #2 in the nation and best in California by the US News World Report 2023-2024 and is a comprehensive stroke center.

This 2-year-old state-of-the-art nursing unit takes care of the most complex patients with neurological needs including strokes, seizure disorders, neuromuscular disorders, craniotomies for tumors, aneurysms, AVMs, multilevel spinal surgeries, and more.

The unit also collaborates and participates in many cutting edge neuroscience researches with many of our world renowned neurosurgeons and clinical researchers.

The incumbent will oversee around 70 FTEs with a $15 million operational budget supporting over 5 neuroscience service lines.

Strong hospital management/leadership, fiscal and operations management skill in a complex academic medical center is essential in this role.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

15 Moffitt is a 24-beds acuity adaptable Neuro Specialty Unit. We care for Neurosurgery, Neurovascular and Neurology patient population which includes pre/post op, ICU transfers, transfer center and direct admits. There is Centralized Cardiac Telemetry and Centralized Continuous Pulse Oximetry capability. Patients may require cardiac and respiratory monitoring, more frequent assessments, and specialized treatments requiring more intensive nursing care than an acute care unit.

One bed is also designated to Women's Health patient (OB, GYN, GynOnc) requiring services that are unavailable at Mission Bay.

Neurovascular/ Neurological: CVAs/strokes, seizure disorders, altered mental status, encephalitis, neuromuscular disorders, TIAs, and intractable migraines.
Neurosurgical: Craniotomies for tumors, acoustic neuromas, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, deep brain stimulators, trigeminal neuralgia, and seizure disorders. Transsphenoidal surgeries for pituitary tumors, and stereotactic biopsies. VP (ventriculo- peritoneal) shunts and lumbar drain placements; and select EVDs. Neuro-Interventional: Cerebral angiograms and embolizations.
An interdisciplinary team of nurses, physicians, therapists, and Case Managers work together to care for, to rehabilitate to improve outcomes for an optimal discharge to home or other health care settings.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Nursing required
5 or more years of demonstrated hospital management/leadership skills (excluding charge nurse experience), with progressive expertise in patient care services
Registered Nurse in the State of California
BLS by American Heart Association
Knowledge to manage disaster incidents, critical events and ability to problem solve with critical thinking skills
Strong interpersonal skills to create and maintain a climate for effective communication and collaborative decision making
Strong leadership, fiscal and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management and staff from all disciplines
Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration and consistent achievement of objectives
Knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes
Demonstrated knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree in Nursing or relevant area
ANCC RN specialty certification in Nurse Executive or Nurse Executive-Advanced
PCCN by American Association of Critical Care Nurses
SCRN by American Board of Neuroscience Nursing
CNRN by American Board of Neuroscience Nursing

License/Certification

Registered Nurse in the State of California
BLS by American Heart Association
