Job Summary

The Public Affairs Representative — Public Relations is responsible for supporting the organization's public image, communications, and relationships with external stakeholders. This position develops and distributes public information, coordinates media and community communications, supports public events, monitors public sentiment and media coverage, and ensures organizational messages are accurate, timely, professional, and consistent with approved communication policies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development and implementation of public relations and public affairs communication activities.

  • Prepare press releases, public statements, fact sheets, talking points, newsletters, and other communication materials.

  • Draft and edit communications for media, community organizations, stakeholders, employees, and the general public.

  • Respond to routine media and public inquiries in accordance with organizational policies and approved messaging.

  • Coordinate with designated spokespersons and leadership on public communications.

  • Maintain professional relationships with journalists, media organizations, community groups, government representatives, and other stakeholders.

  • Monitor news coverage, social media, and public discussions relevant to the organization.

  • Track media mentions and prepare summaries of public and media coverage.

  • Assist with media interviews, press conferences, briefings, public meetings, and other communications events.

  • Coordinate logistics and materials for public affairs events and community outreach activities.

  • Support the preparation of speeches, presentations, briefing materials, and executive talking points.

  • Ensure public-facing communications are accurate, consistent, clear, and aligned with organizational policies.

  • Coordinate communications across departments to gather accurate information for public statements and announcements.

  • Assist with crisis and issues communications by preparing approved information and supporting established communication procedures.

  • Develop and maintain media contact lists, stakeholder databases, distribution lists, and communication records.

  • Maintain an organized archive of press releases, media inquiries, public statements, photographs, publications, and other communications materials.

  • Support website, newsletter, social media, and other public communication channels as assigned.

  • Coordinate with marketing, legal, leadership, operations, and other internal teams on communications activities.

  • Assist with community outreach programs and initiatives designed to strengthen relationships with external stakeholders.

  • Research public affairs issues, community concerns, media trends, and relevant developments.

  • Prepare communication reports, media-monitoring reports, and performance summaries.

  • Ensure appropriate review and approval of public information before distribution.

  • Follow organizational communication policies, confidentiality requirements, brand standards, and applicable regulations.

  • Identify opportunities to improve public communication, stakeholder engagement, and community outreach.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Public Affairs, Marketing, Political Science, or a related field.

  • 2–5 years of experience in public relations, communications, public affairs, media relations, or a related role.

  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong understanding of public relations and media communication practices.

  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly to general audiences.

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.

  • Excellent organizational and project coordination abilities.

  • Ability to manage multiple communications projects and deadlines.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Ability to maintain professionalism and discretion when handling sensitive information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with news media and journalists.

  • Experience preparing press releases, media advisories, statements, talking points, and briefing materials.

  • Experience with social media and digital communications.

  • Experience supporting public events, community outreach, or stakeholder engagement.

  • Experience with media monitoring and public relations measurement tools.

  • Knowledge of AP Style or another recognized professional writing style.

  • Experience with content management systems and digital publishing platforms.

  • Photography, video, graphic design, or multimedia communication skills are a plus.

  • Crisis communications or issues-management experience is preferred.
