Role Overview

Join our dedicated nursing team in making a lasting difference in the lives of children, adolescents, and adults facing mental health challenges. As a Behavioral Health Unit Secretary LVN, you will provide administrative and clerical support for patients across two units, assist the physicians, psychiatrists, and other healthcare personnel in expediting the processes of patient care. You will act as a point of contact for visitors, and other healthcare personnel and serve as a central contact for telephone calls and distribution point for paperwork, completion of laboratory tests, review test results, and maintain and organize all necessary equipment and supplies.

Core Responsibilities

  • Unit secretarial work involves standard administrative responsibilities, such as answering phones, making copies, scheduling appointments, and maintaining supplies.
  • Admit patients, administer, and maintain patient records, break down medical charts for record keeping and coordinate billing.
  • Responsible for typing up discharge instructions for a patient.
  • Handles patient/family complaints appropriately and according to policy.
  • Contributes to the effective implementation of individual treatment plans of patients through supervision, positive interaction and role modeling, appropriate scoring of observed behaviors, and appropriate consequences or limit setting based on behaviors and program definition.
  • Assesses and ensures the needs of the patients are being met in relation to clothing, linens, and personal hygiene supplies. Supervises personal hygiene tasks.
  • Accompanies patients to unit, mealtime, outdoor/indoor recreation, and education activities and participates in their supervision and instruction as needed.
  • Provides appropriate crisis intervention as necessary by anticipating and responding quickly to escalating behaviors, utilizing de-escalation techniques to diffuse the situation, correctly prioritizing safety concerns, following proper restraint technique guidelines, and displaying neutral emotions.
  • Uses appropriate therapeutic skills by de-escalating aggression, using active listening skills, using appropriate tone and volume of voice, providing a high frequency and variety of positive reinforcements, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and promoting a positive peer culture.
Qualifications

Required
  • Active LVN license in Texas (or eligible compact license)
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program
  • Successful completion of BLS and Handle with Care (available during new employee orientation)
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience as an LVN/LPN, preferably in a psychiatric inpatient setting
  • Must be proficient in phlebotomy and capable of performing blood draws independently
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred
  • Experience working with patients with mental health and behavioral health diagnosis
  • Experience with supporting staff during emergency situations 
Schedule
  • Full-time positions available
  • 8-hour shifts
  • Sunday-Thursday, 6:00am - 2:30pm
  • Tuesday-Saturday, 6:00am - 2:30pm
