Upper School Chemistry Teacher

 Founded in 1905 and serving nearly 1,000 day and boarding students from 28 states and 19 countries, McCallie is one of the country’s premier independent schools and a national leader in educating boys in grades 6-12. As stated in our newly adopted strategic plan, McCallie takes an expansive view of education, seeking to form the whole boy. McCallie seeks a dynamic, innovative, student-centered instructor of chemistry.

Ranked as one of the best STEM programs in the nation, McCallie has recently opened its new $15 million, 40,000 square foot science building with state of the art technology, science labs, and research spaces, including a tissue culture lab, innovation maker-space, and engineering lab. The teacher will join a dozen other science faculty and instruct five sections. Labs should be integrated into sections. The teacher will also be involved in the school's extensive afternoon activity program supporting science research, advising one of the many extracurricular activities. There may be other duties as assigned.

This is a 10-month, full-time position. It is considered exempt under the FLSA, and it is eligible for full benefits.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

• expertise and experience, specifically in the field of chemistry;
• passion for and experience in helping students uncover real-world connections to chemistry;
• willingness to work cooperatively within a strong department, on course teams, and along vertical course sequences;
• deep understanding of, support for, and desire to live out McCallie’s mission for the good of McCallie boys - including both the school’s commitment to character development and the ideals of honor, truth, and duty and the school’s Christian foundation and Judeo-Christian heritage.

Requirements

 Applicants must possess:

• Experience teaching chemistry; and
• a bachelor’s degree in chemistry.

Additional qualifications or characteristics desired, but not required, include:

• experience working in or with aspects of science industry, especially those related to chemistry;
• involvement in various levels of student science research;
• familiarity with Next Generation Science Standards and 3-D science instruction;
• cross-cultural competencies or experiences; 
• experience relevant to teaching, coaching another sport, or serving in another program area.
