Job Description - Upper School English Teacher (Literature)

Description

UPPER SCHOOL ENGLISH TEACHER (LITERATURE) FULL TIMEAtlanta, GA2025-2026

Atlanta Classical Academy seeks a full-time Literature Teacher. English teachers at Atlanta Classical are primarily invested in helping students encounter the world of literature by offering them the tools to acquire the mind of an author. Teachers promote thoughtful and informed discussion about great books through deference to the texts themselves. This occurs through disciplined close reading and weekly writing assignments that require students to capture an author’s arguments through analysis of evidence. Each day, the English teacher must make challenging material accessible to all students through carefully sequenced questions that promote both comprehension and vigorous debate.  This position would report to the Upper School Principal on Atlanta Classical Academy's Atlanta campus.

The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Guide students toward rich conversations about the human experience through daily analysis of great books.
  • Equip students with the tools to encounter great literature on their own by teaching them the skills of close reading.
  • Develop writing prompts and study questions that promote evidenced-based literary analysis.
  • Offer students consistent and detailed feedback on their written work.
  • Promote and embody the school’s mission and virtues in a professional manner.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other faculty members and with parents in order to help students thrive.

Qualified candidates will meet the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Literature or related field
  • Three to five years of related work experience preferred

Strong candidates will support the school’s Mission: to develop students in mind and character through a classical, content-rich curriculum that emphasizes the principles of virtuous living, traditional learning, and civic responsibility.  They will have enthusiasm for the Vision: to be a nationally regarded K-12 classical school and serve as a local and national incubator for growth and promotion of classical education. And they will embody the school’s organizational values. We value

  • the tenets of classical, liberal arts education;
  • community and partnership in the common pursuit of forming intelligent, virtuous citizens;
  • excellence in teaching and learning;
  • the virtues we aim to teach our students: courage, courtesy, honesty, humility, perseverance, self-government, and service.

Benefits Offerings:

Full-time, benefits-eligible employees are offered the following:

  • Competitive medical, dental, and vision insurance options
  • Long-term and short-term disability
  • Life insurance
  • Participation in the Teachers Retirement System of GA*
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Priority enrollment for children in the school
