About Upper School World Languages
Courses in the world languages develop all the basic skills – listening, speaking, reading, writing and punctuation. They provide students with an understanding and appreciation of a culture other than their own and help to develop global citizens. The language being studied is used in the classroom from the onset. Students acquire a working knowledge of essential grammatical structures and learn to speak and understand the language. Accurate and effective writing is a major goal, and serious full-length works are read beginning in the third year. Entering students may wish to continue studying a language begun at their previous schools. Placement test scores will help determine the appropriate language level. Other students may begin a new language at this point in their education. To meet graduation requirements, students must complete the sequential study of one language with a minimum of two years.
