Located in the hills of southwest Austin, Texas, St. Michael’s Catholic Preparatory School is an outstanding co-educational Independent Catholic school serving students from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade in Austin, Texas. The Lower School is comprised of PreK 3-4th grades, the Middle School houses grades 5-8, and the Upper School contains grades 9-12. Summary of Position

This position needs a dynamic, innovative educator to develop their aesthetic understanding and appreciation while simultaneously developing their artistic skills and talents. Responsibilities include teaching assigned sections of courses, leading an advisory, participating in on-going community service projects and retreats with students and fellow teachers, and the opportunity to design and implement theatre programming. This position is a full-time, exempt faculty position that will begin in August 2025. The employee will work for 10 months of the year. The hired employee will report to the Head of Upper School.

Job Details 

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrate a positive attitude towards students, staff and faculty.
  • Be passionate about pedagogy and collaborative work.
  • Dedicated to carrying out the mission of the school.
  • Possess wide-ranging academic preparation.
  • Be fully committed to the development of a well-rounded student.
  • Develop Theatre curriculum, teach Theatre courses, and organize and execute all extracurricular theatre production activities (2-4 Productions per year).
  • Work proactively to generate robust enrollment in theatre classes.
  • Select production scripts and materials in alignment with the Catholic mission of the school.
  • Develop a program schedule and coordinate activities with the school calendar.
  • Plan and direct all stage productions, monitor compliance with licensing agreements, and coordinate publicity & playbill information with the Communications department.
  • Encourage active student participation within the Theatre program, inform students about personal responsibilities, organize auditions and cast productions from all appropriate grade levels. 
  • Directing technical aspects of the productions, obtaining all production materials, directing set construction, planning lighting & sound designs. 
  • Direct work crews, supervise all rehearsals & performances and oversee make-up, costume & wardrobe activities. 
  • Plan and oversee all theatre-related budget items, expense records and coordinate the return of any associated production rental equipment. 
  • Store all production materials in a neat and timely manner after the completion of a production. 
  • Maintain effective and timely, advance communication with parents of students involved in theatre courses and stage productions. 
  • Work collaboratively with other departments relative to use of the theatre space for all school events and facilities rentals.
  • Be familiar with the function of the theater technical equipment and fixtures, and is responsible for the inventory, maintenance and upkeep of that equipment and those fixtures.  
  • Work collaboratively with the Fine Arts Faculty in support of the overall Fine Arts program. 
  • Expected to contribute to our Winter Term, a 3 week term during which diverse opportunities are offered for classes, academic travel and internships.

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree and prior experience.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills, excellent communication skills and a commitment to both the developmental needs of adolescents and to education.
