Job Summary
A general outpatient urologist provides evaluation, diagnosis, and non-emergency treatment of urologic conditions affecting men and women. This role focuses on clinic-based care, preventive services, and minor procedures, with limited or no inpatient or surgical responsibilities depending on the practice.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
Evaluate and treat conditions such as:
Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Kidney stones
Overactive bladder and incontinence
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
Erectile dysfunction
Hematuria (blood in urine)
Pelvic floor disorders
Manage chronic urologic conditions through follow-up care
Procedures (Office-Based)
Perform minor procedures such as:
Cystoscopy
Vasectomy (in some practices)
Catheter placement and management
Prostate exams and biopsies (depending on setup)
Urodynamic testing
Diagnostics
Order and interpret tests:
Urinalysis and urine cultures
Ultrasound, CT scans (review results)
PSA (prostate-specific antigen) testing
Bladder function studies
Patient Education
Counsel patients on:
Lifestyle modifications
Preventive urologic health
Treatment options and medications
Collaboration
Coordinate care with:
Primary care physicians
Gynecologists (for female pelvic conditions)
Oncologists (if cancer is suspected)
Surgeons for cases needing operative care
Work Setting
Outpatient clinic or private practice
Ambulatory care center
Minimal hospital rounding (varies by employer)
Typical Schedule
Regular business hours (e.g., Monday–Friday)
Limited on-call duties (often light or none in outpatient-focused roles)
Qualifications
MD or DO degree
Residency training in Urology
Board certified or board eligible in Urology
State medical license
Skills & Competencies
Strong diagnostic and clinical decision-making skills
Communication and patient counseling
Proficiency in office-based urologic procedures
Ability to manage both male and female urologic conditions
