The ideal candidate will have a strong grasp of scientific concepts across multiple disciplines and the ability to turn complex research into clear, engaging journalism for a broad audience. This role combines daily news writing with deeper enterprise features, requiring strong editorial instincts, excellent sourcing skills and a passion for explaining how science shapes the world.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting & Writing

  • Pitch and produce multiple story ideas, many exclusive or original, on a daily basis across breaking science news, explainers, analysis pieces and enterprise features.

  • Translate complex scientific papers, data and technical concepts into accessible, accurate and compelling copy.

  • Fact-check all scientific claims rigorously and highlight important caveats, uncertainties and context for readers.

  • Report confidently on new research, preprints, emerging technologies, scientific claims, regulatory developments and policy shifts.

  • An ability and willingness to create engaging content across multiple platforms, using a variety of digital media tools and techniques, including recording video and audio.

Sourcing & Research

  • Monitor scientific journals, preprint servers, government databases and research institutions for story leads and trends.

  • Conduct interviews with scientists, researchers, industry experts, regulators and agencies.

  • Build and maintain a strong network of expert sources and feel comfortable calling them under tight deadlines.

Editorial & Digital Skills

  • Craft strong, accurate headlines and copy to maximise reach and engagement.

  • Use social media platforms to identify emerging topics, trending issues and science stories of public interest.

  • Contribute science and technology stories to the daily news list and proactively generate original ideas.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Broad and up-to-date knowledge across scientific fields (essential).

  • Ability to read and interpret complex scientific studies and communicate them clearly to a general audience.

  • Strong news judgment and the ability to identify significant developments within scientific research and policy.

  • At least 3-5 years working as a science writer at a newspaper, news website, magazine or television news show.

  • A clear understanding of the DailyMail.com brand, editorial voice and audience.

  • Excellent writing, interviewing and fact-checking skills.

  • Ability to work independently, manage deadlines and originate story ideas.

  • Comfortable making expert calls and working at speed during breaking news situations.

  • Familiarity with digital publishing tools, best practices and audience engagement strategies.

This is an in-office position, based in New York City and, when not travelling on stories, will require attendance in the office five days a week.

Salary range - $75,000-$85,000 DOE

Benefits: Healthcare, dental, optical, life insurance and 401K

Please include a short cover letter explaining why you believe you’d be successful in this role and three published pieces that demonstrate your range as a writer.
