Job Description - USCG Captain

About Summerset Marine Construction  Summerset Marine Construction has been providing a full range of lakefront services to its customers in Southeastern Wisconsin since 1990. As the largest pier and lift dealer in Wisconsin, Summerset has grown over the years along with its customers’ needs, able to provide the expertise and products necessary for the perfect waterfront solution. Servicing hundreds of clients from Madison to Milwaukee, Summerset Marine provides the highest level of expertise to design, install and support any pier and boat lift system, always on call for any service needs. About the role The USCG Captain is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of tugboats (up to 100 tons) on the water. This includes maneuvering and pushing a variety of barges (ranging from 20x30 feet to 40x80 feet). The captain will ensure that all operations comply with USCG regulations, navigational standards, and safety protocols. The position requires flexibility, as work schedules vary on a weekly or monthly basis, depending on project needs. This role is on-call and may require being available at short notice. What you'll do Safely operating tugboats in various weather and water conditions to push barges of different sizes. Maintaining knowledge of local waterways and navigation routes to ensure safe and efficient transport of barges. Communicating with the senior foreman to coordinate tugboat movements and ensure proper barge positioning. Performing routine inspections and basic maintenance on the tugboat to ensure operational readiness. Adhering to all USCG regulations, industry standards, and safety procedures to minimize risks and ensure the safety of personnel and equipment. Keeping logs and reports of tugboat/barge operations, maintenance, and any incidents. Providing leadership in emergencies and ensuring crew safety during operations. Qualifications USCG Captain License (Required) Towing endorsement (Preferred)  High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Previous experience in a marine or construction environment. Ability to swim and be comfortable working on the water.  Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Certification in CPR and first aid is a plus. May be required to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch or crawl.  Vision abilities require close vision assessments. Steel toe boots are required.  Travel Requirements: Travel to jobsites is required.
