Were seeking an experienced Utilities Manager to lead energy and utility operations for a large manufacturing mill in the Richmond, VA area. With a strong focus on operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and sustainability, this role is pivotal in driving cost-effective, environmentally responsible utilities management.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the mill-wide strategy for optimizing energy usage, utilities operations, and sustainability efforts.

• Develop and implement plans to reduce energy consumption, increase efficiency, and transition to renewable energy sources.

• Monitor and analyze energy usage trends; identify opportunities for improvement and cost savings.

• Ensure compliance with environmental regulations across all utilities systems (boiler, steam, water, waste treatment, and landfill).

• Oversee the safe operation and maintenance of powerhouse, boiler, wastewater, and landfill systems.

• Lead, coach, and develop a team of 20+ employees, fostering a culture of safety and continuous improvement.

• Negotiate energy contracts and manage vendor relationships including external contractors and energy suppliers.

• Create and administer training programs aligned with safety and compliance standards.

• Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, engineering, procurement, and environmental departments.

• Provide executive-level reporting on energy and utilities performance to mill leadership.

• Drive preventative maintenance and asset reliability strategies within the department.

• Contribute to capital project development, including design, installation, and commissioning of new utilities infrastructure.

Qualifications & Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in utilities/energy management, environmental services, or facility operations.

• Proven leadership managing energy consumption, cost analysis, and data-driven performance improvement.

• Experience with utility budgeting, contract negotiation, and capital projects.

• Strong working knowledge of wastewater treatment (aerobic required; anaerobic preferred) and steam/boiler systems.

• Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Engineering, Environmental Science, or related technical field.

• Preferred certifications:

  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM)

  • Certified Energy Procurement Professional (CEP)

  • Building Operator Certification (BOC)

  • LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP)

• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
