Summary of Position:

The Utility Operator is a full-time skilled position within the Santo Domingo Pueblo Tribal Utility Authority. The position is intended for individuals who have progressed beyond entry-level utility work and have demonstrated the technical competency, certification, reliability, integrity, safety awareness, accountability, and professional conduct required to represent SDPTUA.

The Utility Operator performs and assists with water production and distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, utility construction and maintenance, sampling and compliance, SCADA and process monitoring, equipment operation, emergency response, and other SDPTUA operational responsibilities. Work is performed under the supervision of the Utility Manager and within the authority allowed by the employee's certifications, training, demonstrated competency, and assigned duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.


• Current Water Operator Level I or Wastewater Operator Level I certification required at the time of application. Certification in both water and wastewater is preferred.


• Relevant hands-on experience in water or wastewater operations, utility construction, public works, mechanical maintenance, heavy equipment operation, or a closely related field required. Documented successful experience through an SDPTUA apprenticeship or project-based assignment may be considered toward this requirement.


• Demonstrated ability to safely perform assigned utility duties and effectively apply operator training, technical knowledge, and certification requirements in the field.


• Ability and willingness to work outdoors and in various utility environments, including extended hours, evenings, weekends, holidays, emergency situations, and on-call assignments as required.


• Ability to perform the essential physical functions of the position, with reasonable accommodation where applicable.


• Water or Wastewater Operator Level II certification, or documented progress toward obtaining Level II certification.


• Hands-on experience with water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, treatment facilities, lift stations, pumps, SCADA systems, sampling, utility construction, and/or heavy equipment operation.


• Relevant utility or workplace safety training, including OSHA, confined space, excavation and trenching, HAZWOPER, traffic control, equipment operation, or other related certifications or training.


• Demonstrated experience providing guidance, training, or mentorship to apprentices or less-experienced utility personnel.


• The Utility Operator is expected to maintain all required certifications and continue progressing toward higher certifications in water and wastewater.


• Valid New Mexico driver's license and ability to meet applicable Santo Domingo Pueblo vehicle operation and liability insurance requirements.


• Must successfully complete all required pre-employment screening requirements, including a background check and drug screening.
