Grade 8

Full Time, non-exempt

  

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

Performs intermediate skilled trades work assisting in the maintenance and repair of specialized machinery, equipment, and system components at the Town’s water and wastewater treatment plant and related facilities; does related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Chief Utility Plant Mechanic.

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm’s length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment including a self-contained  

Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Maintaining and repairing treatment plant machinery, equipment system components, wells, pump houses,  lift stations; assisting with the installation of plant equipment.

Performs preventive maintenance on plant equipment and systems; changes oil and greases equipment bearings; replaces worn belts; replaces fuses; adjusts pumps, generators, engines, electric motors, etc.; cleans system parts and equipment.

Repairs, replaces, and/or renovates fixtures, system components, equipment, and machinery as needed. Performs electrical, mechanical, carpentry, and plumbing work as required.

Diagnoses problems and notifies supervisor of needed repairs/replacements.

Modifies equipment and/or system components as needed to enable continuous and effective operating conditions. Performs rough and finished carpentry and painting work associated with repairing or replacing plant structures and fixtures.

Performs general grounds maintenance for properties surrounding treatment plants, wells, and lift stations. Operates a variety of hand and power tools in the performance of assigned duties. 

Maintains records of preventive maintenance and repairs completed in all applicable platforms.

Helps log all assets and their related tasks into applicable record platforms 

Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of equipment, system components and machinery of water and wastewater treatment plants; general knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual tasks involved in the maintenance and repair of water and wastewater treatment plants; general knowledge and skill of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment assigned; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; ability to keep digital and written records, make oral and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or vocational school including or supplemented by courses in the mechanical trade and considerable experience in water and/or wastewater treatment plant maintenance work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
