Job Description - Utility Technician

Broadband Utility Technician

Location: Pocatello, Idaho

Position Type: Full-Time

Compensation: $22.00 - $24.00 / hour

Reports To: Utility & Fleet Supervisor

Why You Want to Join Our Team

For over 75 years, we have been a trusted cornerstone of rural connectivity, evolving from a traditional utility provider into a forward-thinking broadband pioneer. We don't just connect people to the internet; we safeguard their homes and enhance their lives through premium add-on services like mobile plans, advanced home and data security with high-end managed routers, Arlo indoor/outdoor smart cameras, and expansive outdoor Wi-Fi solutions.

We take care of the people who build our future. Right out of the gate, you will enjoy an industry-leading benefits package, featuring comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage for just 50¢ per paycheck, a generous 401(k) company match up to 6%, robust paid time off, and extensive personal and professional development programs.

If you want to build a long-term career with an established industry leader that puts people and technical excellence first, your next chapter starts here.

About the Role

As a Broadband Utility Technician, you are the boots-on-the-ground guardian of our fiber network footprint. In this role, you will play a critical part in our infrastructure expansion by adding trace lines to our existing fiber plant and partnering directly with our locating contractors to ensure network safety and accuracy.

This position requires a blend of technical capability, a sharp eye for detail, and a collaborative spirit. You will make strategic decisions in the field that directly impact the sustainability of our network and the safety of excavation crews and the surrounding community.

What You Will Do (Job Duties)

  • Locate and Protect: Identify, trace, and mark underground utility lines with precision to prevent service disruptions and utility damage.

  • Utilize Precision Technology: Operate specialized electronic locating equipment and mapping tools to accurately identify network paths.

  • Coordinate & Collaborate: Partner effectively with utility companies, local contractors, and internal construction/excavation teams to ensure safe digging practices.

  • Maintain Operational Safety: Follow rigid safety protocols and guidelines during all utility locating and field activities to maintain a zero-incident environment.

  • Documentation: Complete accurate reports and digital documentation of utility locations and field findings under general supervision.

  • Problem-Solving: Handle moderately complex site challenges independently, while knowing when to escalate highly complex or unusual issues to senior staff.

Who You Are (Our Ideal Team Member)

We are looking for a specific type of professional to join our tight-knit crew—someone who naturally demonstrates the characteristics of an indispensable teammate:

  • You put the team first: You possess true professional humility. You care more about the team's collective success and keeping our community connected than receiving personal recognition. You respect your peers and value diverse perspectives.

  • You have an internal drive: You are self-motivated, diligent, and constantly looking around corners to see what needs to be done next. You take pride in your work ethic and don't need to be micromanaged to do a thorough job.

  • You understand people: You possess strong relational awareness. Whether you are dealing with a property owner, a third-party contractor, or an internal team member, you communicate with integrity, show respect, and practice top-tier customer service.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Experience: 2 to 4 years of experience in utility locating, construction, or a related broadband/telecommunications field.

  • Certifications: Valid utility locating certification is highly preferred (or the ability to obtain one upon hire).

  • Technical Skillset: Solid working knowledge of underground utility infrastructure and specialized tracking equipment.

  • Licensing: Valid driver’s license with a clean, safe driving record.

  • Screening: Must be able to pass pre-employment drug and background screenings.

Physical Competencies

  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects (35–50 lbs. frequently; 50+ lbs. occasionally).

  • Strong manual dexterity to operate fine-tuned electronic equipment and hand tools.

  • Comfort working outdoors in all weather conditions and traversing uneven terrain.

  • Physical mobility required for kneeling, stooping, bending, and reaching

The Full Benefits Package

  • Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance for just 50¢ per paycheck

  • Tele-Health Services & Preventative Wellness Programs

  • 401(k) with up to a 6% Company Matching Contribution

  • Generous Paid Time Off (prorated 14 days in Year 1, increasing annually)

  • 10 Observed Paid Holidays

  • Company-Paid Basic Life & Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance

  • Company-Paid Short-Term Disability & Long-Term Disability Coverage

  • Company-Paid 3rd Party Personal Finance Management Services

  • Tuition Reimbursement Program (for both professional and personal growth)

  • Voluntary Flex Spending Accounts (FSA) for Medical and/or Daycare

  • Voluntary Supplemental Group Term Life, Accident, and Critical Illness Insurance

  • Free high-speed internet service (if living within our service footprint)

  • Comprehensive on-the-job training and safety certifications
