Job Description - VA Medical Technologist

The Medical Technologist (MT) / Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS)


provides comprehensive laboratory testing services, supporting the


diagnosis and treatment of patients. The MT performs as a Generalist,


working across all areas of the laboratory including Chemistry, Blood Bank,


Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis, with preferred experience in


Microbiology.



Schedule:


VA Business Hours: Multiple Shifts to include: 0700 AM-0330 PM; 0730AM-


4000PM; 0800AM-0430PM; 1030AM-0700PM; 1130AM-0800PM; 1230PM-


900PM; 0330PM-1200AM.



Personnel shall be available and present during normal VAPAHCS


hours, which will be established and may be revised as deemed


appropriate for safe patient care. Currently, normal operating hours are


twenty-four hours per day for 7 days per week. Based on requirements and


history, the schedule shifts will be 8 hours. Employees will receive their


schedule 2-4 weeks in advance. This can change due to patient care


needs.


A. Off-hours Coverage: Contractors will not be on-call.


B. Length of shifts: There will be seven different 8-hour shifts.


C. Holidays and Overtime: There will be no holiday or overtime scheduled


or authorized for payment.



Key Responsibilities


Perform laboratory testing in Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Blood Bank,


Immunology, Urinalysis, and Microbiology (preferred).


Process and analyze specimens, ensuring accurate and timely results.


Calibrate instruments, perform quality control procedures, and document


activities.


Troubleshoot instrumentation issues and initiate corrective actions as needed.


Ensure compliance with VA, CAP, AABB, FDA, and Joint Commission


standards.


Document critical results and notify ordering providers according to protocols.


Participate in proficiency testing, competency assessments, and QA/QI


programs.



Qualifications


Bachelors Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Clinical


Laboratory Science, or related field.


Certified as MT, MLS, or CLS by ASCP or AMT.


Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Generalist Medical Technologist.


Experience in Microbiology preferred.


Ability to meet VA credentialing and training requirements, including proof of


immunizations and negative TB test.


Fluent in English (written and verbal).
