Position Summary:
Position assists with overhauls, repairs automobiles, trucks and light/heavy duty equipment as well as adjusts and installs automotive/heavy equipment parts. Follows a preventative maintenance program for all Town vehicles and equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Incumbent will perform repairs, tune up work, diagnose mechanical problems, adjusts injectors/carburetion, electrical, brake systems, etc. disassembles diesel or gasoline engines as necessary and inspects, repairs and/or replaces such parts as injection valves, cylinder heads and sleeves, pistons rings, connection rods, bearings, gaskets and crank shafts.
Incumbent repairs clutches, transmissions (both manual and automatic), differentials, air compressors, superchargers, generators, governors, reduction and planetary gears, hydraulic couplings, braking and steering systems, cooling systems, electrical systems and brake systems, and major tune-ups to gas/diesel engines.
Incumbent installs gasoline or diesel engines, performs minor automotive body work such as installing glass and removing or replacing external body parts and keeps his immediate work area neat and clean.

Education and Experience Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED
Previous experience in vehicle maintenance preferred
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Must be able to read and interpret standard automotive manuals, diagrams, prints and specifications. He must be able to operate specialized machinery, i.e., valve reseaters, and refacers, brake realigners, cylinder and shaft grinders, heavy duty press, engine analyzer and air conditioning equipment. Incumbent is expected to diagnose and make complete repairs on all mechanical problems. Must be able to understand and use inside/outside calipers, cylinder gauges and dial indicators. Will perform tune ups, oil changes etc. on smaller vehicles as well as fire engines and smaller trucks.
Must have basic knowledge of automotive components and assemblies and how they operate in relationship to each other, i.e. automatic transmission, planetary gears and electrical systems.
Must have basic knowledge of mathematics and the ability to maintain accurate records and perform computations. Incumbent must have a high school education
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with customers and co-workers
Ability to lift 50 pounds
Ability to walk, climb stairs
Ability to adequately read schematics, diagrams, and drawings
Mechanical ability to troubleshoot causes of mechanical failure and determine appropriate corrective action
Knowledge of OSHA standards for industrial environment
Reference and Background checks may be conducted including criminal, credit and driver’s license checks.
