Job Description - Veteran Affairs Director

The director advises, helps, and counsels veterans and their families with the steps necessary to obtain veterans' benefits and assistance; refers customers to other agencies; keeps records; tracks activities; and provides public relations.

Additional responsibilities include effective overall operation of the department of three; preparing federal, state, and county forms, records, and requests for assistance; ensuring compliance with regulations; coordinating outreach programs with service organizations; advertising department function and services to public; and maintaining thorough knowledge of veterans' rights and benefits programs.

Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma or GED; an honorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces; self-motivation, diligence, and time management skills appropriate to remain productive when often working alone and as an individual expert in matters of specialized code, rules, policy, benefits, analysis, etc.; minimum of two years' experience within a supervisory capacity or similar level of oversight and responsibility; considerable working knowledge of VA system structure, as well as knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to veteran affairs; proficiency in Excel, Word, Outlook; demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality; and comfort level with conducting community outreach and public speaking. Incumbent must obtain PA State Veterans Service Office Accreditation within one year of placement into position if without it at hire.

Competitive benefits packages start first of the month following 30 calendar days and includes 90% employer-paid PPO health insurance with vision and three-tier prescription components, defined benefit pension plan, defined contribution plan, 14 paid holidays and other time-off provisions.
