Job Description - Veterinary Specialty Surgery Manager


Points East Veterinary Specialty Hospital (VSH) in Wilson, NC is a Level III VECCS-certified facility located in a brand-new, 17,000 sq. ft. hospital that opened in October 2023. We are proud to offer advanced, collaborative veterinary care with a robust team that includes 13 full-time dedicated ER doctors, 2.5 board-certified criticalists, 2 board-certified surgeons, and a full diagnostic imaging service equipped with ultrasound and a 64-slice CT scanner. Our hospital is supported by a skilled team of over 80 professionals who are committed to excellence in patient care.

Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Veterinary Specialty Surgery Manager to lead our surgical services team. This role is responsible for coordinating day-to-day operations within the surgery department, managing and supporting a team of technicians, and working closely with our board-certified surgeons. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, specialty surgery experience, and a passion for patient care.

Direct clinical support is expected as needed, including hands-on assistance with surgical cases. This is a full-time position with No on-call, weekend, or holiday requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

Team Leadership

  • Supervise and support the surgery technician team
  • Coordinate scheduling, training, and performance feedback
  • Foster a collaborative and positive work environment

Surgical Service Operations

  • Oversee day-to-day case flow and surgical preparation
  • Maintain surgical suite cleanliness, organization, and inventory
  • Ensure readiness of instruments and equipment

Surgeon Support & Clinical Care

  • Collaborate closely with two board-certified surgeons
  • Provide direct clinical care and technical assistance as needed
  • Support consistent delivery of high-quality, specialty-level surgical services

Communication & Collaboration

  • Serve as a liaison between the surgery department and other hospital services
  • Assist with client communications and coordination of case logistics

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in specialty surgery or anesthesia required
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience is highly desirable
  • Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-centered environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) – Surgery or Anesthesia 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to work with or around sick and injured animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, and unpleasant odors.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times, including in emotionally charged or challenging situations; must maintain composure and professionalism under pressure.
  • Ability to deliver high-quality customer service, consistently demonstrating a “yes culture” for clients and a solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Proficient with computers, electronic medical records, and related software; ability to learn and adapt to new technology platforms quickly.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with attention to detail and clarity.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical ability to safely handle and restrain animals of various sizes and temperaments.
  • Must be able to:
  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs frequently and up to 70 lbs occasionally with assistance.
  • Stand for extended periods of time (up to 10–12 hours).
  • Walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach regularly as part of daily responsibilities.
  • Perform repetitive tasks involving hands and arms (e.g., typing, lifting, restraining, cleaning).
