Job Description - Veterinary Technician

Required Duties & Responsibilities 



  • Provide nursing care and husbandry for all hospitalized and quarantined animals.

  • Prepare for medical and surgical procedures, including set-up and break-down of necessary equipment.

  • Participate in medical and surgical care for all animals at Franklin Park Zoo, Stone Zoo, Trailside Museum, and within the Conservation Department.

  • Perform in-house laboratory procedures, including manual complete blood counts, fecal examinations, urinalyses, cytology, and serum biochemistries.

  • Conduct daily data entry, record-keeping, and filing.

  • Competently triage and provide emergency care for animals under guidance of veterinary staff.

  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as required.



Minimum Job Requirements




  • Minimum of three years of full-time experience as a clinical veterinary technician.

  • A willingness and enthusiasm to learn on the job.

  • Certification or eligibility for certification as a veterinary technician in Massachusetts and nationally.

  • Willingness to work directly with dangerous animals, contagious diseases, and in hazardous conditions.

  • Ability to receive rabies immunizations/titers, along with an understanding of zoonotic disease risks.

  • Availability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime, as well as outside in inclement weather when necessary.

  • Must obtain a Class A Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms and a Class III driver’s license, and pass CORI screenings and random drug testing.

  • Eagerness to learn new techniques on the job and to work effectively within a diverse team.

  • Clear and professional written communication skills are essential.


·  Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.



Preferred qualifications:




  • Five or more years of progressive clinical experience, preferrable working with zoological species.

  • Knowledge of and experience with laboratory procedures, particularly manual blood counts on avians and reptiles.

  • Strong foundation in anesthetic techniques and patient monitoring.

  • Familiarity with protocols for preventive health maintenance of captive animal collections.

  • Understanding of relevant pharmaceutical agents, their handling, and administration.

  • Experience in triage and health assessment of animals, occasionally in the absence of an on-site veterinarian.

  • Knowledge of dietary and husbandry requirements, as well as physical restraint techniques for exotic and wild animals.
