Job Description - Vice President Controller

PLR Talent Forward provides HR and talent sourcing services to credit unions in North and South Carolinas.  We are pleased to partner with SAFE Federal Credit Union to assist with the identification of candidates for the position of Vice President, Controller position.



About SAFE Federal Credit Union:


Located in Sumter, South Carolina, SAFE FCU prioritizes operational excellence and regulatory integrity to protect its members and support its mission. The Vice President, Controller will oversee the daily operations of the Accounting Department and play a critical role in financial reporting, audits, and strategic planning. 



What you'll do:



  • Responsible for directing daily accounting operations and financial reporting.

  • Oversees deposit operations and staff (ACH, checks, cash letter submission, etc.)

  • Prepares the monthly allowance for credit loss calculation in accordance with the approved methodology. 

  • Prepares the NCUA 5300 Call Report.

  • Interfaces with outside auditors and NCUA examiners. Ensures the timely and accurate preparation of audit/exam documents as requested.

  • Prepares the operating budget for the Accounting Department and assists with the preparation of the credit union’s annual operating budget.

  • Utilizes accounting information systems to produce analytical and forecasting reports to support model assumptions.

  • Prepares and provides accurate and timely financial reports for management and the Board of Directors. 

  • Participate as active member of the Product and Pricing Committee (PPC) and the Asset Liability Committee (ALCO).

  • Consults with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) on financial projections, forecasting, strategy, etc.

  • Ensures procedures are maintained and kept current for department and related activities.

  •  Meets established department goals with minimal supervision; updates supervisor/leader on all major projects, employee issues and goal progress.

  • Ensures Accounting Department employment needs are met including timekeeping, annual performance evaluations, scheduling, training, motivation and coaching in an atmosphere of continuous improvement.

  • Performs job interview/hiring process for employee vacancies as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned.



To Qualify for this position, you'll need: 



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Provide strategic input and suggestions for future enhancements for system upgrades to achieve effective and efficient balance sheet management.



PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:


Must be able to communicate well with subordinates and other credit union employees and demonstrate leadership ability.  A professional attitude and appearance is vital to the success of this position.



QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:


Your position has specific procedures that must be followed to comply with Privacy Act, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), and Bank Secrecy/Patriot Act. You will receive annual training to keep you current on any changes to these policies/procedures to assure compliance.  Failure to comply with procedures may cause termination of your position as well as possible monetary penalties from the federal regulatory agency.



EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:


A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited university required.  Advanced degree in a business-related field preferred, plus a minimum of seven years of progressive management experience in a financial institution or corporation.   Requires the ability to lead and supervise others.  Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with others is essential.



LANGUAGE SKILLS:


Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations to employees and management.



MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:


Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers and decimals.



REASONING ABILITY:


Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram or schedule form.



CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:


Certified Public Account (CPA) is preferred.



OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:


Ability to operate a personal computer using spreadsheet, word-processing and database software.  Familiarity with credit union accounting terminology and standards would be helpful.  Familiarity with credit union system terminology and acronyms would be helpful. Annually complete and achieve passing scores on various SAFE FCU Policy, Procedure, Development and Enhancement Curriculum.
