Role Description

The SF SPCA has embarked on an ambitious strategic plan, Vision 2030, with the goal of providing access to lifesaving veterinary care to over 8 million animals across California by 2030 through an expansion of our direct service, partnerships, and advocacy work. To support this effort, we seek a stellar leader to oversee the development and management of the SF SPCA brand, and the marketing and communication efforts required to support the day-to-day work, programmatic goals, and long-term strategic direction of the organization.

Reporting to the EVP, Advancement, and working closely with the Chief Advancement Officer, the VP, Marketing & Communications will manage and lead the team responsible for promoting and enhancing the organization's brand and reputation. Their goal will be to foster broader awareness of our mission and services. Specifically, they will advance the organization's position with relevant constituents, including donors, potential adopters, team members, and clients of our veterinary offerings, such as our full-service hospital, spay/neuter clinic, offsite Community Veterinary Clinic, mobile vaccine clinics, and other services.

The VP will oversee a department responsible for the development, planning, and execution of all SF SPCA brand marketing, internal and external communications, media and publications, web content and digital marketing management, events, collateral, and graphic design.

The successful candidate will have deep experience managing dynamic teams, developing collaborative relationships, juggling multiple projects, prioritizing, meeting deadlines, and seeing tasks through to completion.

A passion for animal welfare and a commitment to the mission of the SF SPCA is essential.

Core Responsibilities

Brand Management

Develops and implements a plan to advance the Society's brand identity, broaden awareness of its programs and priorities, and increase the visibility of its services across key stakeholder audiences including adopters and hospital clients, employees and volunteers, and board members and donors, as well as members of our larger community.
Oversees a communications strategy that allows the SF SPCA to cultivate meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including media and key influencers.
Identifies opportunities and supports initiatives that strategically build the SF SPCA's brand and ensures brand visibility and consistency across services and programs; priority areas include fundraising, adoptions, recruiting, and veterinary clients.
Identifies challenges and emerging issues with executive and leadership teams to recognize internal and external communications opportunities.
Ensures values of diversity, equity, access, and inclusion are reflected in all aspects of the SF SPCA's brand expression.
Marketing & Communications

Leads the strategic and day-to-day marketing & communications efforts of the organization.
Defines key performance indicators and leads the team to measure, track, and report on the effectiveness of tactics; uses data to update and drive strategy for tactics.
Engages stakeholders to build out content strategies that deliver creative, compelling, and engaging content in support of priorities.
Develops effective strategies for reaching diverse communities in the Bay Area and beyond.
Oversees development of all communication channels including collateral, publications, digital, social media, and website; Engages stakeholders to build out content strategies that deliver creative, compelling, and engaging content in support of communication priorities.
Ensures the highest standard of editorial quality for all communications.
Serves as point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization.
Prioritizes media opportunities and actively engages, cultivates, and manages press relationships to ensure coverage.
Leadership and Management

Oversees an 8-person team and outside vendors.
Recruits and hires qualified candidates who fit position requirements and the work environment.
Sets clear direction for team that aligns with SF SPCA strategy, mission, and vision.
Develops staff by identifying and encouraging training and professional development opportunities appropriate to role and creating development plans for staff.
Provides staff with consistent performance feedback - both positive and constructive - and acts as a coach and mentor.
Creates a learning culture by encouraging debriefs after completion of significant stages of projects.
Creates a respectful and inclusive work environment for the team and models respectful and inclusive behavior.
Oversees daily activities, including budgeting, planning, and staff development.
Requirements

15+ years of progressive experience in senior marketing/brand management/communications positions, including 5+ years managing a department of five or more staff members.
Passion for brand building, marketing, and communications, with proven ability to get the best results and creativity out of teams.
Deep understanding of the unique marketing and communication needs of non-profit organizations.
Ability to lead strategy and campaigns for both brand building and performance marketing, with a history of continually innovating and testing new ideas.
Exceptional written and oral communicator with a strong sense of vision, sophistication and a collaborative, creative, and strategic approach to communication.
Demonstrated ability to build a strong, diverse team through attracting and retaining talent.
In-depth experience managing and coaching for top-quality outputs from internal teams and external consultants/agencies, and demonstrated ability to build, develop, and foster relationships internally and externally.
Track record of strong decision-making in the face of complex decisions. • Adaptability and resilience to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with shifting priorities and tight deadlines.
Experience handling sensitive and confidential issues.
Salary & Benefits

The starting salary for this position depends on the depth and breadth of experience. The expected range is $180,000 - $215,000.
