Job Description - Vice President of Development

The Los Angeles Brotherhood Crusade is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1968 to enrich the lives of youth, seniors, homeless populations, economically disadvantaged families, and under-served individuals in South Los Angeles by providing and facilitating a variety of essential educational services, social services, cultural activities, vocational opportunities and economic empowerment opportunities.

Brotherhood Crusade envisions a South Los Angeles devoid of health disparities, disenfranchisement, and poverty- associated adverse public health conditions. We believe that South Los Angeles can be a safe, thriving, culturally relevant, and inclusive community that provides all residents equitable access to human and social services and continually improves their quality of life. Our mission is to remove and/or help individuals overcome the barriers that deter their pursuit of success in life; effectuate academic and vocational success; provide opportunities for personal, social, and economic growth; promote access to artistic excellence and cultural awareness; increase financial literacy; facilitate opportunities for a better quality of life; and promote health and safety.

Summary

 

The Vice President, Development serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting Brotherhood Crusade. In partnership with the President and CEO, this position is responsible for fundraising and development activities. The incumbent will help forge new relationships to build Brotherhood Crusade’s visibility, impact, and financial resources. The Vice President, Development also will design and implement a comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances by cultivating individual and philanthropic support and has primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow an $12 million budget through the solicitation of major gifts, federal and state grants, special events, and corporate and foundation support. The incumbent will expand and diversify Brotherhood Crusade’s donor base/pipeline and work closely with executive team members to secure funding for new initiatives.

1.      Support and partner with the President and CEO on all major fundraising initiatives.

2.      Collaborate with the Executive Vice President (EVP) to develop and implement Brotherhood Crusade’s financial strategy and Workplace Giving Programs.

3.      Actively work with the President and CEO and senior staff to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy to include corporate, foundation, government grants, etc.

4.      Lead, guide, and direct the development and execution of all proposals; write and archive all proposals with a long-term relationship-management approach.

5.      Oversee research funding sources and trends, with foresight, to help position Brotherhood Crusade ahead of major funding changes or trends.

6.      Monitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to senior leaders.

7.      Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors.

8.      Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program.

9.      Identify, develop, and mentor any development team.

QUALIFICATIONS

 Education & Experience

 

1. 10-plus years of development experience in a nonprofit organization; demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources).

2. Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time.

3.   Ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.

4.  Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.

5. 5-10 years of managerial, supervisory experience.  

6. Bachelor's degree from a four-year university required.

7. Master's degree preferred.

1. Possesses a valid driver's license and state-required auto insurance.

2. Required to travel several times per month (25% to 50% of the time).

3. Ability to work with minimal supervision.

4. Ability to handle confidential information.

5.   Participates in, conducts, and sustains performance quality improvement activities according to designated role and responsibilities.

6.Sensitivity to service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.

7. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

8. Punctual and dependable attendance.

9.Understands Los Angeles Brotherhood Crusade’s basic philosophy and participates fully in carrying out its mission.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents.  Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.  Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style.  Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a valid California Driver's License.

Due to our in-person and in office work with LAUSD, City of LA, County of LA and other work partners that require our team to be vaccinated we require that all potential candidates must be COVID-19 vaccinated with either, Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson.

WORKING CONDITIONS WHILE PERFORMING ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND EQUIPMENT USED

The successful candidate will be required to report to and work from the office complex at least five days a week. Offices are traditionally equipped with computers, telephones, desks, chairs, and office machines. Additionally, each office offers an instructional classroom from which orientations and trainings are conducted.

SALARY RANGE:

Benefits and salary will be negotiated based on experience, education, and the needs of the program.
