Job Description - Vice President- Property Claims Practices

The P&C Corporate Claims Division consists of over 100 professionals who support Great American’s highly-diversified P&C claims operations across the world. The division’s functional teams include Claims Practices, Claims Counsel, Claims Support Services, and Legacy Claims.

The Claims Practices team ensures effective management of complex, high-impact claims and claims issues, provides quality management and technical oversight, and assures execution of the company’s claims policies and philosophies.

The Divisional VP –Claims Practices leads the Claim Practices property team and reports to the Divisional Senior Vice President responsible for the Claims Practices team.

Great American’s culture is built on connection, shared learning, and strong relationships. To support this, employees in this role are expected to be on-site four days a week, with the flexibility to work one day remotely. Core inoffice days are Tuesday–Thursday, with the fourth day determined by business needs. Qualified internal candidates will be considered to work remotely.

Responsibilities:

The position’s overall objectives and responsibilities are to:

  • Lead a team that provides technical support to business units writing commercial property, marine, equine, surety and fidelity, and other property or first party products.

  • Develop and implement resolution strategies in high exposure cases.

  • Provide advanced technical guidance and oversight of the company’s highest-exposure first party claims.

  • Provide reserve and settlement authority to business unit claim staff in connection with their requests and recommendations.

  • Participate in claims projects or project components as needed.

  • Assist in litigation management of claims presenting significant first party exposures as well as litigation against the Company.

  • Provide input and direction in connection with policy wording changes, working in cooperation with staff from business units, claims counsel and corporate legal.

  • Drive and support effective investigation strategies on first party and subrogation matters.

  • Participate in claim audits administered by the Corporate Claims division, as well as TPA audits administered by business units.

  • Drive for continual improvement in the company’s use of key vendors e.g., experts, counsel, TPAs, other experts including negotiation of fee agreements, working with the Strategic Sourcing team and P&C Legal.

  • Support and advise business units on matters of state compliance and regulatory requirements.

  • Participate in selection and presentation of claim training topics.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Generally, minimum of ten years of P&C claims handling and oversight experience.

  • Previous experience in managing claims staff.

  • Broad-based knowledge of claims across multiple specialty first party lines.

  • Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree, and an advanced degree or CPCU designation is preferred.

  • Proven ability to partner effectively with senior management.

  • Experience leading and influencing groups or teams from multiple departments, especially in a matrix-type environment.

  • Experience with management of claims vendors (e.g., lawyers, experts, TPAs).

  • Ability to clearly articulate vision and objectives.

  • Significant complex problem-solving experience.

  • Strong project-management skills.
