Job Description - Visiting Faculty in Biology

Description

The Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Keuka College seeks a one-year, full time visiting faculty member in Biology for the 2025 – 2026 Academic year, to begin August 15, 2025. Rank will be at the level of visiting instructor or visiting assistant professor, commensurate with background and experience. Teaching responsibilities are somewhat flexible depending on the qualifications of the instructor. The fall load could include general biology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, plant biology, or scientific communication, as well as an introductory course in the natural sciences. The spring load for the preferred candidate would include general biology as well as the chemistry course for pre-health professionals. Opportunities for research with undergraduate students will be available, but this is not an expectation for this one-year visiting position. High-quality teaching and mentoring are imperative, and we seek enthusiastic faculty who value working closely with our student population. The department plans to conduct a search for a tenure-track position for the 26-27 academic year.

Please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy, unofficial transcripts (both undergraduate and graduate), and contact information for three references. Keuka College is committed to diversity and strongly encourages applications from individuals in underrepresented groups in higher education. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate courses in biology and chemistry, primarily at the 1st or 2nd year level.
  • Plan course instruction based upon existing course descriptions and/or syllabus, goals, and objectives.
  • Design, administer, and grade course assignments and exams to assess the achievement of course objectives as identified in the syllabus.
  • Provide clear documentation of student progress through regular feedback, academic alerts, and midterm progress reports as necessary.
  • Create a classroom environment that actively engages students and is conducive to learning.
  • Plan effectively for classes and student success.
  • Maintain regular office hours to meet one-on-one with students.
  • Adhere to college policies and procedures.
  • Attend provided/necessary training and other meetings to support effectiveness within the position as required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Evening and weekend hours required.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.

Employee Benefits Overview

  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental and Vision Coverage
  • Financial assistance for educational expenses, enabling professional growth and development.
  • Protection for you and your loved ones with employer-sponsored life insurance coverage.
  • Generous paid time off      including holidays and sick leave to ensure work-life balance.
  • Retirement benefits eligible on the 1st day of employment and matching contributions after 6 months of employment
  • Access to confidential counseling and support services for mental health and personal matters through the Employee Assistance Program

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Biology or closely related discipline preferred, ABD or master’s degree considered.
  • Demonstrated interest and potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching is essential. Prior teaching experience preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to be sensitive to and respond to needs/concerns of students, faculty, college staff and the public.
