The Emerging Infectious Disease Ecology Laboratory (TEIDEL) in the Department of Plant Pathology at The Ohio State University seeks a motivated J‑1 Scholar to participate in hands‑on research training. TEIDEL investigates infectious disease ecology using multiple plant–microbe model systems, with the goal of uncovering the principles that allow complex biological processes to occur reproducibly.

The scholar will receive structured laboratory training in molecular biology, biochemistry, and plant pathology techniques while contributing to ongoing research projects within a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.

Training Focus & Responsibilities

The J‑1 Scholar will train in and assist with:

Molecular Biology & Biochemistry Techniques

  • DNA and RNA extraction
  • Agarose and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis
  • Molecular cloning
  • Bacterial culture preparation, maintenance, and characterization
  • Additional standard wet‑lab protocols as appropriate for the project

Plant & Field‑Based Activities

  • Propagation and maintenance of plant material including seed and cutting stocks
  • Preparation of plant growth environments and monitoring plant health
  • Assisting with seasonal fieldwork activities as needed, depending on project timelines

General Laboratory Training

  • Proper laboratory safety practices and documentation
  • Accurate record‑keeping and data organization
  • Collaborative participation in lab meetings and research discussions

This position provides extensive cross‑disciplinary exposure and is ideal for scholars seeking training at the interface of plant pathology, infectious disease ecology, and molecular biology.

Required Qualifications

  • Eligibility for a J‑1 Scholar visa
  • Bachelor's in biology, plant science, microbiology or related field required
  • Demonstrated interest or background in biology, plant sciences, microbiology, or related fields
  • Ability to follow laboratory protocols and maintain attention to detail
  • Willingness to work with plant and microbial material
