Job Description - Volunteer Board Member

About SAfG

Scientific Adventures for Girls is a Bay Area 501(c)(3) founded in 2014 with a singular focus: changing the face of STEM - one girl at a time, by removing systemic barriers to girls' participation in STEM. We provide afterschool programs, camps, and family events for TK–6th grade children — with a special emphasis on girls and under-resourced youth — to build STEM identity, belonging, and confidence. To date, we have had the privilege of serving over 14,000 children and families across the East Bay.

By joining the SAfG Board, you'll be standing behind one of the only non-profits in the Bay Area dedicated exclusively to dismantling these barriers through afterschool STEM programming for girls at Title I schools. Your support will help us reach even more young girls with programming designed to spark lasting STEM confidence and belonging, and to build the life skills they'll carry with them always: critical thinking, curiosity, collaboration, problem solving, perseverance, and determination.

You'll be joining a warm, committed community of people who believe that changing the face of STEM starts early, and who share a vision of a more gender-equitable world —  A STEM workforce that reflects the diversity of the communities it serves where women, particularly women of color, hold equal voice, influence, and economic power in the fields that shape our world.

The Opportunity

SAfG is looking for mission-driven professionals to join its Board of Directors. Board members play a vital governance role — providing strategic oversight, financial stewardship, and community advocacy to help SAfG grow and thrive for the long term. This is a volunteer position.

We're currently welcoming applications for three board seats and one community advisor:

  • Member 1 — Finance: CFO, Director of Finance, or equivalent with expertise in financial management, investments, and accounting best practices
  • Member 2 — People & Legal: CPO, Director of HR/Talent Management, labor attorney, or equivalent with expertise in human resources or employment law
  • Member 3 — Open Expertise: A professional background not yet represented on the board (e.g., marketing, nonprofit management, technology, or policy)
  • Community Advisor: A parent, caregiver, or community member with lived experience connected to the girls and families SAfG serves

Must-Have Qualifications

We're looking for people who bring:

  • A deep commitment to SAfG's mission, values, and the communities we serve — particularly girls and under-resourced youth
  • Genuine enthusiasm for active participation in board meetings, committees, and events
  • The ability to offer strategic guidance and contribute to long-term organizational planning
  • A sound understanding of financial stewardship and fiduciary responsibility, including reviewing budgets and financial statements
  • Ethical leadership and integrity, with consistent adherence to conflict-of-interest policies
  • A collaborative spirit and the ability to work constructively with diverse stakeholders
  • A willingness to serve as an organizational ambassador, including attending at least one networking event per fiscal year
  • The ability to support fundraising through leveraging networks, donor cultivation, or personal financial contribution
  • Sufficient availability to prepare for, and meaningfully contribute to, governance responsibilities

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

It's a bonus if you:

  • Are based in the Bay Area
  • Have prior nonprofit board experience
  • Bring lived experience or a background that reflects the communities SAfG serves — geographically, demographically, or socioeconomically

Time Commitment

We want to be upfront about what board membership looks like so you can make an informed and enthusiastic yes:

  • Board meetings: Bi-monthly, beginning in October, 1.5 hours per session (6 meetings/year); members are expected to attend at least 5 of 6
  • Committee work: Monthly or bi-monthly participation on at least one board committee (e.g., Finance/Operations, Development/Events/Marketing, Programming/Curriculum, Executive/Governance)
  • Events: Attendance at a minimum of one SAfG event or fundraiser per year
  • Fundraising: Each board member helps raise or contribute a minimum of $5,000 per year through donor outreach, event support, or other means
  • Term: Minimum of one, two-year term

Our Commitment to Diversity

SAfG is deeply committed to building a board that reflects the full diversity of the communities we serve. We warmly and actively encourage individuals from diverse racial, educational, economic, and professional backgrounds — and especially individuals of color — to apply. We believe that a rich range of lived experiences and perspectives makes our governance stronger and our mission more meaningful.
