Job Description - Volunteer Coordinator - Hospice



Full-time


Description

This individual will coordinate the recruitment, development, and training of volunteers to enhance the services provided to patients and the community by ProCare Hospice of Nevada. The volunteer coordinator is an integral part of the interdisciplinary team, coordinating respite activities for patients’ caregivers and education and training in the home.

Requirements

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Fosters and maintains an effective working relationship between peers, professional staff, and other personnel within the community
  2. Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the agency’s mission, philosophy, and scope of services
  3. Follows an individualized Plan of Care established by the interdisciplinary team for each patient
  4. Immediately reports any patient changes to the RN Case Manager or Director of Nursing
  5. Reports unusual conditions, observations, and pertinent information to the nurse
  6. Reviews volunteer applications, interviews, and screens them for selection and placement
  7. Manages and documents ongoing volunteer recruitment efforts
  8. Initiates appropriate actions needed to assist the volunteers/caregivers needs as they are related to the patient’s loss and grief
  9. Facilitates communication between the patient, caregiver or volunteer and other hospice team members
  10. Has the ability to intervene in patient/volunteer conflicts when necessary
  11. Provides ongoing support and training for volunteers
  12. Provides training regarding grief and loss to patient, loved ones and volunteers
  13. Actively participates in community events to promote volunteer recruitment and community development
  14. Evaluates volunteer performances per ProCare Hospice of Nevada policy
  15. Must be able to provide training regarding ethical and professional boundaries and/or coordinate such training
  16. Works closely with other members of the interdisciplinary team to ensure appropriate assignment and utilization of volunteers  
  17. Communicates with patient/family/significant other to assess volunteer needs
  18. Records services provided through the use of volunteers, including monthly reports specifying types of services and hours worked
  19. Assists with the coordination of volunteers at various functions 
  20. Participates in public speaking engagements for community education purposes and volunteer recruitment
  21. Assists with fundraising activities as needed/requested
  22. Provides recognition events and opportunities as appropriate
  23. Notifies volunteer when patient death occurs and facilitates closure of case and coordination with bereavement program if needed
  24. Understands/provides basic principles of palliative care/pain management within the Scope of Practice 
  25. Complies with all documentation policies/procedures
  26. Completes appropriate documentation in a legible and timely manner
  27. Participates in Performance Improvement activities as requested
  28. Other duties as assigned

Additional Functions:

  1. Adheres to patient rights, abuse reporting and confidentiality policies
  2. Attends scheduled staff meetings and/or in-service training
  3. Adheres to departmental dress code requirements related to personal grooming and other attire
  4. Demonstrates reliability by making every attempt to report to work on time and providing proper notification for absences or tardiness
  5. Demonstrates ability to problem-solve and make decisions by assessing situations and considering alternatives, seeking guidance and direction, as necessary. Utilizes proper chain of command
  6. Demonstrates effective time management skills by coordinating activities to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency
  7. Is willing to adjust or revise work schedules as requested
  8. Assumes responsibility for on-going personal development and continuing education
  9. Stays current with all mandatory agency and regulatory requirements
  10. Completes assigned projects within specified time frames

Physical/Safety Requirements:

  1. Must have the strength and endurance required for standing, walking, lifting, bending, and pushing on an intermittent basis between 10 and 30 lbs.
  2. Utilizes appropriate durable medical equipment as needed in a safe manner
  3. Uses appropriate body mechanics as needed for personal use and safe patient care
  4. This position is Category 1 for potential exposure to blood/body fluids. (Requires the performance of procedures or other tasks in the work routine that involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues, or a potential for spills or splashes of them. Protective measures should be used while engaged in Category 1 tasks with exposure potential.)
  5. Utilizes appropriate PPE as needed
  6. Follows the designated plan of action in the event of a fire or other emergency/disaster
  7. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, work- related stresses, and driving hazards 
  8. The individual may be required to drive to meetings with clients or health care professional and patients’ homes
  9. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. Prefer 1 year experience as a Volunteer Coordinator in a hospice or hospital setting. (Will accept other medical management experience, if appropriate)
  2. Successful completion of a background check pursuant to NRS 449.188 and NRS 179A.100 along with a pre-employment drug screen and physical, TB testing, previous employment and reference checking, and an MVR (may include verification of education)
  3. Capable of working flexible hours to accommodate volunteer recruitment and training efforts which may include evening and weekend hours
  4. Must be able to handle frequent interruptions
  5. Must be CPR/BLS Certified
  6. Must be able to cope with emotionally charged situations encompassing patients, families, and other caregivers
  7. Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and current auto insurance
