Job Description - Waste Water Treatment-Operator 1

The City of Blackfoot, located in southeastern Idaho, is only 25 minutes from Idaho State University and
within an easy drive of Yellowstone National Park. Blackfoot is the county seat of Bingham County, home
of the Eastern Idaho State Fair and is also known for being an area rich in agriculture. Working for the
City in this capacity benefits our thriving community by ensuring that our citizens and businesses have
environmentally safe treated wastewater.
The primary function of an employee in this position is to perform semi-skilled operations and
maintenance duties in the city wastewater treatment facility, including monitoring, operating, and
maintaining equipment. Additionally, an employee in this position performs testing and sampling duties, including making equipment adjustments to maintain operational standards. The employee in this class
does not exercise supervisory duties over other employees. The work is performed under the direct
supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor and under general supervision of the
Wastewater Superintendent. The principal duties of this position are performed in an outdoor
environment that may include working in adverse weather conditions and hazards involving the use of
power tools, heavy equipment, and exposure to hazardous material. Due to the on-call nature of this
position, the working hours vary and may include weekends, evenings, and holidays.
Possession of Idaho Wastewater Treatment Operator-In-Training certificate (minimum) is required within
six (6) months from the date of hire. An Idaho driver’s license with Class B CDL and tanker endorsements
is also required within 90 days of date of hire.

Required experience:
•High school diploma or GED equivalency is required,


• One (1) year wastewater collection and/or treatment OR related system experience OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work is preferred.
•Accurately follow written and oral instructions.
•Accurately read and interpret system maps, diagrams, and technical and operational manuals.
•Accurately read and interpret meters, operational and testing equipment.
•Operate power equipment and hand tools.
•Operate specialized system inspection, cleaning, and maintenance equipment.
•Prepare written reports and maintain system performance records.
•Communicate clearly and effectively with the public and other employees.
Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, stamina, vision, and balance to work in an office and wastewater
treatment environment.
