Job Statement

The Water Plant Operator I is a skilled technical position responsible for performing analytical and process-related tasks in the operation of a drinking water treatment plant. This role involves meeting the demands of the distribution system while ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The Water Treatment Plant Operator I provides reliable services, protects public health, and delivers exceptional customer service to our customers.


Essential Duties


  1. Performs all necessary duties and responsibilities to ensure compliance with the regulations set by ADEM, EPA, and other applicable regulatory bodies.

  2. Takes responsibility for providing adequate, safe, and high-quality potable water, taking immediate action if water quality is compromised. This role requires independent work during after-hours, weekends, and holidays.

  3. Monitors the telemetry and SCADA systems to control reservoir valves, booster pumps, and wells, distributing finished water throughout the system according to customer needs.

  4. Adjusts parameters according to laboratory analyses of raw and finished water to ensure proper treatment.

  5. Operates and controls electric motors, pumps, valves, and other equipment, either manually or remotely, to regulate the flow of raw and finished water.

  6. Manages chemical feeders and other equipment to ensure optimal treatment is achieved cost-effectively.

  7. Review the accuracy of all written and electronic log entries, records, and reports, ensuring all data is correctly documented at the end of each shift.

  8. Communicates effectively with the Plant Lead and Supervisor regarding issues that require their attention, including the ability to recognize and report matters that may impact water quality or availability.

  9. Conduct regular inspections of the plant and report any malfunctions discovered.


Additional Duties


  1. Answering routine questions from customers regarding water issues or directing them to the appropriate personnel for further assistance.

  2. Cleans equipment, including basins and filters, through washdowns using an industrial hose, as well as performing general cleaning duties.

  3. Continues to perform all responsibilities until the relief certified operator has arrived and has been briefed on the current operating conditions.

  4. Carries out basic maintenance and troubleshooting of plant equipment.

  5. Assists with the operator training program to ensure new personnel receive proper training.

  6. Monitors for the development of new water quality regulations or treatment techniques at the local, state, and federal levels.

  7. Maintains the continuing education hours needed in compliance with ADEM Division 10 to remain certified.

  8. Performs additional duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

Education: A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required. An associate's degree or equivalent coursework in chemistry, math, hydraulics, and computers is highly preferred. Candidates must possess an ADEM Grade IV Water Treatment Operator Certification or be able to obtain reciprocity through ADEM within six (6) months. Employment will be subject to review if the deadlines are not met.


 


Experience: Two (2) years of experience in a Grade IV water treatment plant are required. Alternatively, equivalent working experience gained through training programs, classes, or seminars may substitute for one (1) year of work experience, subject to approval by ADEM. Candidates should possess knowledge of water quality limits, operational characteristics, services, and activities associated with a water treatment plant. The ability to operate a full range of pumps, chemical feeders, motors, controllers, and process equipment/instrumentation is essential. Familiarity with ADEM Division 7 and Division 10 regulations and laws is also required.


Additional Requirements

Operation of Equipment: Chemical feeders, pumps, laboratory equipment, electrical controls, computers, laboratory equipment, and water testing equipment.


 


Physical Demands:  Requires visual and manual dexterity, cannot be


colorblind to differentiate color, climbing of steps & ladders, exposure to outdoor weather,


carrying items or equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.


 


Other: Shift work required. Subject to “on call” and emergency duty. Safe use of hazardous chemicals associated with the job.  Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
